How are you determining the amount of line you are letting out?

Are you just counting it off the reel as it spools out?

Do you have the line on your planer reel marked somehow?

I know it is not that crucial on the shallow bait but I would think you would want to have a pretty good idea for the deep bait. That's one thing I like about using the downrigger is having the counter so you can know exactly how much line you have let out and being able to put a bait back at exactly the same depth as previous bites.
