Off at our customary high noon again today. No messing with looking live bait. It was bumpy but doable at 22 mph, so we decided to try to find some of the same fish that eluded us last Friday.
It was a different ocean out there today. Warm (high 60's) water has moved in to within 15 miles. By the time we got to our area (Red & White reef south, 100 feet of water) we had gone passed a couple of weed lines and the color was stream cobalt and a balmy 69 degrees.
Captain Slip chose the first spot wisely. The anchor took on the first drop and we ended up within 10 feet of a nice break on the rock we were fishing. The groupers were there and they were hungry. After a couple of quick reds, some big, bad gags moved in on the party.
The first one was dark brown, like he'd been living in a cave:
The rest lightened up!
In about 15 minutes, we were better than halfway to our limit of 10 total & done with the 4 gags for the day:
When gags continued eating our stuff, we released a couple and moved on to look for a couple more reds.
This is one VERY LUCKY gag, Slip send back to grow up some more:
Two more stops and 30 minutes later, it was time to head for home
Took it easy heading home looking new bottom and munching on fresh wahoo salad chef Slip had prepared. A count at the dock confirmed that we had the right number in the box.
Today was one of those days. 3 hours of riding for one hour of intense pullage. Could have loaded the boat with 'em but, thankfully, didn't need to. The winter bite is in full swing and I was very lucky to experience it in the company of my good friend Slip.
Did you say that our 4 gag limit was done for the day? I think you had all 4 of those gags boxed and iced in about 4 minutes flat. You were certainly on a mission today Biscoto. No mercy for the bottom critters. Revenge with a vengance! Awesome display of bustin their ass and boxin em son. You definitely made the trip short and sweet. Enjoyed it as always Biscoto. Congratulations and thanks for the show.
glad to see you put a stompin' on those sumbitches after we stunk up the place so bad last week. they just didnt know what they had coming! also glad to see the groupers chewed because the trout and drum sure as hell did not .
