Hey guys,
I have a 24 Cape Horn offshore and need to find a home for my larger gaff.. Any suggestions on where to mount it. I put in the ttop rod holder last year but with a new center rigger it is getting kind of crowded up there. I want it out of way but accessible. Your thoughts are appreciated.
If the covering boards overhang the gunnels, get you a pair of of the rubber holders used to hold stern lights for storage. Mount them on your gunnels right at the bottom of the covering boards. This keeps the gaff out of the way, as well as keeping the hook covered to prevent accidents. It also allows quick access. Just reach up under the gunnels and pop it out.
my buddy down in stuart had a pretty sweet set up for his long kingfish gaffs.
up in the t-top, he put a section of pvc pipe running across the width of it. length was about an inch longer than the distance between the legs on either side. put 2 screw on caps on the pvc, and mounted it so there was a half inch on either side (stickin out beyond the legs port and starboard).
the gaff hook would be placed around the pvc pipe, and hang down the leg of the t-top, and secured with a single velcro strap. the pipe did the job of insuring the hook did not rotate out to a dangerous angle, as well as being handy dry storage for all his kites. and it was easy as hell to get the gaff loose in a hurry.
I have two of these Gaff holders that I made from starboard mounted u8nder the gunnels. One for a 10' gaff and one for a 6' gaff.Sort of like the Birdsall!! Mark
