    Gaff Price

Hey guys I have been offered a brand new Pompanette 4"x48" black gaff for $45 including shipping. Sound like a good deal to you. I only have til today to buy it. Sounds good to me but dont know anything about their gaffs. I usually use Aftco but this might be too good to pass up. Jay

    TOP SHOTS? any good

While were on the discussion of Gaffs

I though i would just ask, HAS ANYONE USED A TOPSHOT GAFF?

They look pretty cool but never got to use one. Do they work better then the normal gaff?

    Topshot gaffs you ask?
Check out some of the BFT footage from the Run Off last year. You will see one in action. I also believe that Marty said Capt Brian uses one for cobia as well.

I used them a few times ,one of the boats i fished on had a complete set

well engineered in my eyes and they work

nice and light but still get the job done

I think that is what my Buddy Riptide uses for release fishing on Giants the smaller , hand held size

I own one of there tag sticks that i got from Melton's ions ago and it is a work of art to say the least

I don't really like Topshots. You really have to swat at the fish like John Belushi in the Samurai Deli Skit on Saturday Night Live, hence the name Topshot. I have always gaffed by laying the gaff across the fish and pulling through, letting the weight of the fish do the hooking. I cringe every time I see ninja action boat side.

There was an editorial about Topshots in Marlin a few months ago.

    Just my $.02...

I was looking at the Pompanette gaffs and only difference I saw fromt he Aftcos is the hook point. The Pomp one is fully rounded instead of a slicing style point. Was curious on any experiences.

I am not a fan either. They do make very good release gaffs whether your trying to release or not. There is a different style of sticking that you must use and I think Lowcountry's reference to SNL is right on the money. Most crews that I have spoken with about these gaffs admit to losing a nice fish before switching back to the rounded aftco style. My only experience with the Top Shot style is with a flying gaff and I personally will not have one as my primary stick on a blue marlin.
