Each four hour watch was traditionally divided into eight 30-minute segments (from the old 30-minute sandglass). So, "five bells" is 2-1/2 hours into each watch. That would be 0230 in the mid-watch, 0630 in the morning watch, 1030 in the forenoon watch, 1430 in the day watch, 1830 in the evening watch, or 2230 of the night watch.

But not 0500.....
