I've been keeping a log for three seasons now. It's hard to get the catch deatils (Time, coords., H2O Temp), as I am in the pit all day. But I try to be as detailed as I possibly can.
I'LL TELL YOU A LITTLE BIT ABOUT MY LOG BOOK....THERE IS NONE IN THE PHYSICAL SENSE....AT LEAST FOR ME.
IN 30 YRS I HAVE NEVER SEEN FIRST HAND ANY LOG BOOK ON ANY BOAT....THERE'S NO EXCEPTION TO THIS....YOU WOULD THINK THAT AT SOME POINT IN TIME A LOG BOOK WOULD FILTER IT'S WAY TO WHERE THAT I WOULD PHYSICALLY SEE IT....
THIS IS NOT THE CASE....I ASK: DO THEY REALLY EXIST?
MY LOG BOOK IS CONSISTENT EVERY DAY....IT'S JUST PART OF MY DAILY ROUTINE.
I LOOK AT THE SAT SHOT...I LISTEN TO MY NETWORK OF FRIENDS AND THEIR REPORTS STARTING DOWN IN SAVANAH GA....I MAKE NEW LEADERS FOR EVERY TRIP...MY HOOKS ARE SHARP....I WATCH MY BAITS....I CHECK MY BAITS...I WEAR KAENON EYEWEAR...I DO NOT DRINK ALCOHOL PERIOD....
AND YES I DEPEND ON MY CAPTAIN TO PUT ME ON THE FISH....DOES HE HAVE A LOG BOOK? HELL... I HAVE NO CLUE....I'VE NEVER SEEN IT IF HE DOES. DOES HE REMEMBER THE LORAN NUMBERS FROM A 39.2 LB MAHI HE CAUGHT AT 1:09 P.M. MAY 19 1999? OF COURSE HE DOES....DOES HE REMEMBER THE SEA SURFACE TEMP ON THAT DAY? YOU'RE DANG RIGHT HE DOES....79.4.......DOES HE REMEMBER HOW MANY CAST NET THROWS HE MADE ON A PILE OF BUNKER IN GALLANTS CREEK SEPT 3RD '94? HAAA! DANG RIGHT HE DOES........HELL HE EVEN REMEMBERS ME OVER SLEEPING JUNE 21, 2001 WHEN I WAS ONE MINUTE -13 SECONDS MINUTES LATE LATE ARRIVING AT THE BOAT.
LOG BOOK? YEAH RIGHT....
I GOT YOUR LOG BOOK HERE....DEAD ON DA DOCK DATS MY LOG BOOK.
I'M CALLING YOU BOYS OUT HERE ON THIS LOG BOOK THINGY.....SHOW ME RIGHT NOW SOME LOG BOOK PICS....NOT JUST SOMETHING YOU WENT AND MADE UP FOR THE BIG SHOW HERE.....TAKE YOU CELL PHONE OUT RIGHT NOW AND TAKE ME A PIC OF YOUR LOG BOOK.....NO EXCUSES OF MY LOG BOOK IS DOWN AT THE SHORE SHIT...
BUT SHOW ME THE REAL DEAL AND I WILL THEN LOG OUT .
good friend they had a cap'n who had all his logs and data (archives of many years)....he totally relied on his past info....
well got to be he was way off in his game.....could not figure out why....he was just not "tuned in"
well back luck struck...hit submerged object enroute to Bahamas...boat sunk.....his Bahamas/Florida archives went down with the boat....crew fine....
well said Cap'n went on to have the BEST fishing he ever experienced....so good that he threw his Mid Atlantic logs in the trash dumpster....
he realized with his archives....he had tunnel vision......did not see the whole picture and that fish migrations although expected were not always cyclical and typical.....
he became Cap'n adventurer in search of...instead of a Cap'n who did the same old daily commute to and fro....
I've been keeping a log for 3 years now and I'm already starting to see trends. At first I was religious about it then the 2nd year I slacked off then again this year I have been hitting it hard. I charter so I keep the date, crew, time fished (we do inshore and offshore so on inshore days I may have more then one trip) pay and tips, moon phase, wind, water temp, water clarity, location, and maybe a hot bait or note section.
For the record my SFC sticker has been on there for a year now not just for the thread

Stick with it when you can. I have piles of notebooks, little flip books, loose scraps of paper. Hyroglyphics to the outsider but for me gold when making a plan. Not neat, not all kinds of detailed but stuff that seemed worth note at the time...
If I sat and coallated all the stuff a bit further than I do I could even predict a season overview pretty quick. Mako comes to mind. How the waters moving, how much rain there was that given year. Almost to where I could see a cycle. Last year screwed that all up though, so its not a perfect science.
My chub notes were marking base conditions and times of bites and where they happened. After a while it became clear that I was nailing tidal movements down along with moon. The internet is cool cause you can go back and look up moon dates from years gone by.
I use voice recorder, digital when at the helm. I record on paper when I am back home.
I like the recorder because I find it helps me remember the little things, damn these blackfins like blue on the late bite etc.
