    FISHERIES SURVEYS

OK.....MAYBE I AM NOT THE ONLY ONE IN THE FISHING COMMUNITY WITH FEDERAL LICENSE .....I.E. TUNA, SHARK, DORADO......ETC.....THAT GETS THESE SURVEYS

I MEAN I HAVE BEEN BOMBARDED WITH PHONE CALLS EACH MONTH AFTER I RECEIVE A LETTER FROM QUANTEC FISHERIES LETTING ME KNOW THAT I WILL RECEIVE A PHONE CALL......
THE LETTERS HAVE A FISHING LOG SURVEY IN THEM.......

    DOES ANYONE FILL THESE OUT?
IF YOU DO FILL IT OUT.............DO THE LETTERS AND CALLS STOP OR DO THEY COME AT A MORE FREQUENT RATE?

I WAS ALWAYS TAUGHT BY ALL THE CAPTAINS THAT THE MORE THAT YOU TELL THEM........THE MORE THEY TAKE AWAY.......SO DON'T TELL THEM SH*T!!!!!!

AM I WRONG IN THAT PHILOSOPHY?

I MEAN WHEN A "SURVEYED LICENSEE FILLS IT OUT AND SENDS THE SURVEY BACK IN.........ARE YOU DOING GOOD TO THE FISHERY AND THE STOCK OR ARE YOU HANGING YOURSELF AND THE REST OF THE FLEET SO TO SPEAK?

HELP ME OUT HERE IF YA'LL CAN.......CAUSE I SURE HATE JUNKMAIL AND ALL I DO WITH THESE IS THROW IT AWAY EACH MONTH....

I FIGURED THIS WAS THE PLACE TO ASK..

I don't think you're hurting the fishery, simply because they don't believe what the fisherman tell them anyway. Just look at the fiasco with the snapper-grouper regs. with the SAFMC. By law, if you have federal permits, you must participate in the survey's when asked.

YEAH GET WHAT YOU ARE SAYING ABOUT THEM NOT BELIEVING THE FISHERMAN ANYWAY..........

WHAT I DON'T GET IS THE FACT THAT BY LAW,........WE ARE SUPPOSED TO FILL THESE OUT.......I HAVE NOT FILLED ONE OUT PERSONALLY YET.......AND I STILL HAVE MY PERMITS....

JUST A THOUGHT HERE........IT REALLY DOESN'T ALL ADD UP TO ME OR MAYBE I AM MISSING SOMETHING .......MAYBE

The permit applications say that before your permits will be renewed, you must have completed all of your log-books and participated in any survey's sent. I've never taken the chance and have always filled them out. I'm not sure, but that may be just for limited access fisheries, but I don't know. It may be something that just doesn't get enforced. I know my commercial log books must be up to date. If not, I get a letter from NOAA, but on the survey's, who knows.

I KNOW THAT THE STATE OF DELAWARE GETS ON ME BY THE END OF THE FOLLOWING MONTH AFTER EACH COMMERCIAL LOG SHEET IS DUE, AND I KNOW THAT THE RULES STATE THE RULES FOR THE FEDERAL PERMITS,........BUT I ALSO KNOW THAT I HAVE SLIPPED,....OR JUST NOT FILLED THE FEDERAL LOG SHEETS OUT LIKE I SAID IN THE PAST AND NOTHING COMES OUT OF IT........IT WAS JUST A THOUGHT THAT I HAD AS TO HOW IMPORTANT IT IS THATS ALL
    THANKS FOR YOUR REPLY.

Not saying this will or even could happen in your case, but I do know that here in VA alot of folks have lost, for example, their crab pot license because they didn't report anything over a period of time. Alot of folks renewed them just so they could have something to fall back on in tough times. Who knows, it's sad to me to see the public more and more frowning on the commercial fisheries out here.

I AGREE WITH YOU ON THAT NOTE. AND IT IS THE SAME HERE IN DELAWARE WITH REPORTING ON STATE FISHING LICENSE........I AM CONVINCED THAT I WILL START TO BE PROMPT ON REPORTING ON MY FEDERAL LICENSES AS WELL. THANKS FOR YOUR INSIGHT.

Guys I do not know if this helps at all but..
Working as a Game Ranger we had our annual head count, of all animals in a certain area, so how do you count every head of animal in 165000 acres, bare with me here, over a 3 day period from the air , flying strips, and squares on the ground driving miles and counting, all the different counts get number crunched and a major miss ratio is added, believe it or not the finale figure is within 3% as to the bi-mass on the land.
I will bet that your local Fish counters have a very similar set up and will build in "wrong" counts and finally arrive at a pretty reasonable close call to the socks along your coast by giving them the figures they are just more accurate, which may raise your quoter rather than drop them.

For some reason I get Pacific Billfish Landing Surveys to fill out every year. That seems really out of touch, as I've never harvested a billfish on the West coast, and my home port is MHC...
