A fish story
Well about a year ago Marty and i were talking and the story of a fish we took in 2003 at the big rock came to conversation. After hearing it Marty said you should put it on sfc sometime so Box here goes.
After a disapointing day on monday losing a 700+ blue marlin we were still hopefull but heads hung a little lower tuesday morning on the ride to the 800 line out of MHC. We fished most of the morning from 100 fathoms out to 250 fathoms looking for that finger of water that was supposed to be there from the roffers shot. After riding for a few hours and talking with some friends getting and giving info we finally found what we were looking for up on the 860 line in about 150 fathoms. Hard change grass edge 80.04- 78.5 cooler side to the inshore side. Make a turn to the inshore side and about the time we get straight out from under the grass she comes, airs out over the left flat and lands mouth first on the mouse trap spanish mack 12/0 7731 500lb jinkai and a chrome dome blue and white. I go to the rod on the back of the bridge and she comes tight but then comes off, drop back on her and she's there let her run off and push the drag up boom big hole bent pole. We got a pretty good look at her on the bite and knew she was a good one but as she jumped away from us she was heading east usually the sign of a nice fish. Well after about 45 mins she was close with flyers out and the swivel up Nesbitt got gloved and ready to do battle on the leader. Another 10 min of hard boat handling and i could not get her cloce enought to grab the first wrap of the 25 feet of 500 lb leader with every change of direction of the wheels she would light up and pull off 25 yards of line. After seeing her close we knew she was a taker this girl had a big rudder. Well now the fun begins for another hour she went straight to the bottom heading east in 200+ fathoms and oh yeah did i mention we had her on a penn 80 not 80wide SINGLE SPEED 100 lb suffix. Going into the bottom half of the second hour we went 360 deg trying to plane her up with no avail. Not gaining any line i made the call to push up the drag still no joy. Due tu the rules of the BIg Rock we were able to handline taking no wraps just fingers and palms backing slowly a foot at a time until after 45 min we finally got her up but she wasn't dead. Got a lip gaff in her and a rope through her lower jaw. After a few minutes of straining we finally got her over the covering board i don't have a door. 3 hours and some change we were headin to the scales. Upon arrival we unloaded and got weighed and measured 109 length and 63 girth the call was 534.50 lbs we were sitting in 1st place. After a few moments a friend weighed a 539 then a 603 came in we were now in 3rd. We heard that our dock neighbor was still hooked up at 6 pm so we waited and shortly after dinner well dinner time since i was unable to eat i found out that another 600+ fish had been weighed well so much for that. Regrouping the next morning we were luck enough to find a rat blue and get the first fish of the day and hold on for the daily so it turned out to be a good week after all.
