We made our first canyon run of the year. I was on a 38 rampage. 10 miles north of the dip in block canyon. We had a full spread out 12 rods. I think that was enough. 10 50w and 2 30w. We where about 45 minutes into our troll when I noticed something funky going on with a out rigger clip. The line was half way acrossed the transom and someone yelled marlin. I look at the spread. Readying my self to deploy a wahoonbox special rigged split bally. Bang the line popped out of the rigger and the marlin starts grey hounding. We got all the lines in and started a angler on the rod. All I heard is I want my hookie. Someone got a hookie and I headed for a pair of gloves. I thought this all they way threw so I thought. First thought in my stupied head was I had watched this on espn for 12 year capt. norm in hawaii. I kept on reminding the angler to keep the line level. We had 650 or so of 130 jb and a 300 foot top shot. Thank god we had all that line. I saw the bottom of the spool more than once. The angler final got mono on the spool and it started to pile up in the middle keep it level. Well that never happened. The line started to fall off the pile. I got tucked under the fish made a run and just about looses the rod. Another angler got on the rod. We ended up after a 35 minute battle in 7 foot seas getting the monster boat side. I grabbed the leader what a mistake why me I thought. Those guys on tv make it look so easy. I did a wrap like capt. Tred Barta tought me two years ago how to do it so you can bail and not loose your hand or get cut in half. Man what a strong fish. I did it several times till I could get my hand on its bill . All is good. The fish is still light up and still means buisness. At that point I estimated the fish to be a little over 12 feet. Im guessing 400 to 450 pounds. I now have my hands on its bill. Im not sure why I was trying to do this but I did. I was trying to get its head near the gunnel for a few pics. Not good. I got its head out of the water. Its slamming my hand into the side of the boat. It beat me up. I remember having my hand hit the side 5 times before I had to send her on the way. The fish was still lit up swimming away. The fish hit a pin rigged ballyhoo rigged with an islander pink and blue. It was awsome after I got the rod redeployed I soon did a damge assessment of my hand. One broken finger. That was all. Well hell lets get another. That was worth it. I think. Im sorry but the video that was taken didnt come out because of the sun and pics I havent gottem yet. I called a good buddy of mine to give him the report. I told him we got a blue. You hooked one a. No we landed one. What? You got it to the boat. Yuppers and no one died? Yuppers.
Question time. Whats the best way to deal with these things boat side?
When you have the fish with both hands on the bill whats the best way to safely remove the hook?
Is there any thing I should know for the future?
I was at dinner with my buddy and the guy who landed the fish last night. The angler said he messed up his ankle while fitting the fish. Ralf on the next boat please buy an xray machine and a dr to go with us. All in a great days work.Know I know why guys go mental to catch marlin.
Nice job on that first fish... Suffering a little makes the story better!!!
My 2 cents for a blue along the boat.
Each fish is different just as us humans... Some are fit others will give up fast!
If it's not a kill fish there is no hurry to bring it to the boat and letting him do one more run may calm him down. At the moment you could reach his bill the boat should move forward while you keep that head right under the water. Any fish over 400lbs we wouldn't hold the bill. For pictures he'll often stay pretty calm along the boat moving forward. As for removing the hook if he's fussy just cut the line a close as you can. It won't bother them a bit. They even sometimes have broken sailfish bills so a hook is no different than just a parasite!
If targetting marlin I'd reduce the number of rods! A big one may have spooled you before you brought in the other rods... Drag setting is the next secret to bringing in a calm fish, fight him to the max and in the last 50 yards bring him the boat not the boat to him.
Get the fingure better and go get another one!

Hooking any marlin in the northeast canyon is a bonus I used to call it bycatch. Pervious years it was really uncommon to have a hook up on a blue or real lucky to see a whiteboy. This yea no one knows whats going on. There are a bunch of reports of guys going 3 for 3 or more on blues on a day troll. Unreel. Guys are catching whites shark fishing with wire leaders and bluefish fillets go figure. We target yellowfin tuna thats our goal just so happens that blue poked his bill in our spread. We always troll something in the spread for marlin not that day and we still got him. I think half the battle was great boat handling. This guy should be running a 80 buddy davis. Thats cockpit had water init for the whole battle. Well I must say that is the biggest fish I have ever gotten my hands on. Now that I think about it. It is like bringing in a planner. I cant wait till I get out on a buddys ocean ill be trying it for sure. Thanks for the imput.
