What a day, what a day! Woke up this morning at 3:50 waiting for the alarm knowing that the wahoo were going to be hot before this front. At the boat by 4:45 to exchange the usual ribbings and smart ass comments with Shane then it is down to buisness. Get out all the rods, check all snap swivels and conections, check the fresh water, untie the bow, start the genset, disconnect the shore power, lastly loosen the stern line so the boat sucks closer to the dock so the party can load their 150 qt cooler full of beer, two weeks worth of clothes, and enough food to feed a 5th grade field trip. By now it is nearing 5:20 and Shane starts paceing the cockpit. Before long one by one the horses start leaving their stalls. Frequent Flyer, Blue Water, Live Wire, Bill Collector, and Sensation, but still no party for the Fight N Lady. Around 6 we see Brian Harrington pull up at the Gulf Dock in the Contender. He comes and goes and still no word from our party. By now it is 6:30 and the chatter on the radio is of the big squal working up the beach. As the boys approach the trawler it ain't a walk in the park out there. 7:00 and we are packing everything back up and talking about breakfast. The legandary Buddy Harris joins us for a bite and eases the sting of a "no show" my entertaining us with stories of boat building and the old days. Just before the tab comes the phone rings and it is our party. Turns out they left Ohio yesterday afternoon, got lost and would not be here till 10:30. So what stated as a full day of hoos, dogs, mahi, and blackfin quickly turned into a half day of spanish and kings. Oh well, the guys had a big time drinking beer and watching me sling the macks and overall it was a good day to stay tight to the beach.
The boys that went offshore had a good day but mother nature made them earn it. From what I saw Frequent Flyer was top hook today with eight wahoo, 6 or so mahi, and two sails.
As for the bait box, crab food. Unrigged all the baits, tossed all the ballys, trashed all the wire, rinsed and hung all the skirts. Could the baits be reused yeah maybe, but the way I look at it if I were going pay my hard earned money to charter a boat I would not want my day riding on refroozen bait. By the way, how could I get out of Kelly's to do list if I did not have to spend half the day rigging up for my next trip.
