Joined my buddy Phil for a little river fishing this morning, absolutely beautiful. I'll be the first to admit I'm not a inshore expert much less the river. Headed out of Oriental to the south side of the river and made our way to the honey hole. Started on a point with a lot of bait getting hammered, small blues and a couple small spanish working them good. Moved around the point and...... what is that??? Closer inspection and I see eye balls, then it starts moving, ALLIGATOR!!!!!! I estimate around 5-6ft long, head was well over a foot long on the surface, a few quick picks and we move on. Next stop I hang a 16in flounder!, Phil on the net and we are in business, then the pinfish show.
Move to the next windy point and Phil doubles over and I work the trolling motor to keep up and a fat slot pup in the net, oh yea! The the WWB goes off, bluefish on the cork bait. I see a good swirl ahead of the boat and cast, instant hook up, nice 20in. speck in the net. Phil lands a small flounder then a sea robin of all things. To finish off the trip we tangle with another nice 22in. pup to finish our limit. Nice ride back across and Phil has a nice mess of fish for supper. Hope the water temps will cool some more after the next front comes thru and the specks crank up.

Any of you guys that are going to be in the area or like to fish the Neuse River keep in mind that on October 3rd the Neuse River Backwater Open will be held. Artificial lure only tournament with a total creel of a 11-fish limit per team that will consist of no more than 2 stripers(rock), 2 drum, 2 flounder, and 5 Speckled trout.
Capt. Lee would love to have you if you are going to be in the area.
