    Fathers Day-Tuna Wahoo

Really fun Father's Day today, I had Gary Rantz, Mike Accordino, and Tom Kokalas on board for an offshore trip. The first item on our agenda was Bluefin tuna, unfortunately someone forgot to tell the bluefish that my Islander/Ballyhoo rigs were not for them, so we had to deal 8 or so of that kind. I managed to run away from the bluefish and within ten minutes we came tight to a nice fat 32" bluefin. Gary had him in the boat in a couple of minutes and the tuna was cored, packed with ice and popped in the fishbox before he knew what happened. The boys then decided they wanted to go sharking, so we set up for that, and I had just gotten three lines out when the first one went off. A short while later we released a six foot blue shark. (Bluefish, Bluefin, Blue Shark.... all I needed now was a Blue Marlin to show up and I would have a Blue Grand Slam!) After the shark release we set out the lines and again had an immediate run off. This time however the crew had gotten involved with a much better fish, and some two hours later, after spinning in a million circles and dodging scallop draggers, we were able to boat a 200 pound Thresher shark. So that was Father's Day, can't wait to do it again!

Nice thresher, Rich! You obviously know where to find 'em. (Some cappy's know how and where to fish for and catch both bluefin, bluefish AND threshers, eh?) That's a good combination of fish and lots of fun for a charter party, along with some great eating too. And two hours on a two hundred pound fish? Man, those longtails are some tough hombres, ain't they? I love 'em, which is why I wrote a book on fishing for them. Thanks for the report and picts.

Fred- I want you to know, I was thinking of you when I was jockeying the boat around, that fish just wanted to stay under the boat! What was your recipe for eating the tail ?
