Now we all know that Capt. Brian Harrington could catch a Marlin, Saildog, Mahi, Wahoo, hell, any fish with his eyes closed and both hands tied behind his back. So every year while we are on vacation, I book a trip with him. Last year it was a phenominal bottom fishing trip that cost me 4 hours of fish cleaning when we got back, not an easy task when your arms feel like spaghetti. The year before that, we went up the ditch and caught a butt load of drum with some nice trout and flounder mixed in. So what would it be this year? Maybe some spanish mackeral or some drag stripping reef donkeys? "I want to go catch some sheepshead" he said." "COOL" I replied, "you would tie your Contender up to a bridge?"
I was informed that it would be a cold day in hades before that happened so I suggested we take my boat. So, we plan to meet a 6:00 am Thursday morning. I wake up to the sound of thunder and rain hitting the roof.
A quick check of the "Local on the Eights" shows a big green mass with some nice sized storm cells mixed in. I wake up John and tell him we won't be fishing but lets go see if Brian wants to eat breakfast. On the way to MHC, he calls me and we decide to meet for breakfast in AB. When we get to the diner, we discover that I have ran over a piece of metal and my left front tire is going flat, Great! Now I have to change a tire in the rain. We go ahead and eat breakfast and when we come back outside the rain has slowed to a sprinkle and John, Brian and I get the tire changed out. Brian heads to the RUN OFF to check the radar and John and I go to kill some time at a bait and tackle store. 30 minutes later Brian calls and says the weather is going to clear so we go jump in the boat and pick him up at the dock. It's still raining so we head to the AB bridge to find some shelter while we fish. Not much luck there but I did catch one keeper and Brian caught a nice Oyster Toad.
By now the weather is getting better so we run back to MHC and try the railroad trestle. Brian sets the hook on a couple of black bass, a tautog, a pigfish but no convict. I have to tell you now, I didn't fish much during this portion of the trip. I held the boat and watched the BEAST in action. I swear the man has the reflexes of a cat but I laughed my butt off a couple of times when his rod tip would bounce and he would set the hook on notta. It didn't take him long figure it out and he completed his grand slam with his first convict, of course I had the camera ready.
We made a short move over to the bridge to a promising looking spot and hit paydirt. Here is John with a nice keeper:
By now Brian was showing us how to do it and he was pulling some good keepers.
Here are some more pictures from the trip that almost didn't happen. As always, fishing with Brian is an education, I'm still smiling though, thinking of him sracthing around in the crab bucket looking for a fiddler that had the "right color"
As always Brian, it was fun and I hope we can do it again when they are biting better and we have more time. You guys let me know if you see a 25 ft. Contender tied up to a piling!
