Expanded VHF channels: locations to have work done
Any ideas on where to get this done near MHC, NC?
Have heard through the grapevine that some places will not do it for legal reasons. But as I know very little about this I could be completely wrong. Thanks in advance. |

Expanded Channels
I don't know about in Morehead but Battlecat Electronics in Wilmington can install expanded in STANDARD radios easily. ICOM is a little more difficult they say. I think that Bill's Marine Electronics can do them. There is nothing illegal about expanded channels. They are just additional frequencies that are not included in factory programming.
One little hint...find out which channels are being used by the various fleets where you will be fishing and make sure you have those frequencies installed. |

It varies from model to model within brands as to whether or not they can be unlocked. Just because you have an ICOM doesn't mean you can unlock them, it depends on the model, and is like that with most brands. There is a legal issue involved also. Those channels are restricted to international commercial traffic. That's why US radios don't come unlocked. Some shops won't do it for that reason. Sorry but I don't know your neck of the woods so I can't recommend a shop for you.

I have an ICOM Model 422 and Model 602...does anyone know if either of these radios can be easilt converted?
Also, I'm located in the Mystic, CT area....anyone know of a radio shop in this neck of the woods that does this work?
