I always thought they were too smart to make a trolled bait. Especially after seeing how they would come into the spread here on the east coast, play around a bit then swim away.
A few years back, I was fishing in Hawaii off of the Waianae harbor when we had two come into the spread and both get hooked They were a mess and after getting everything cleaned up and lines cut, we hooked another one???? We ran up to the point to get away from them and sure enough another one was hooked. Now granted, they were not the bottle nose type that we get around here, but damn they were a pain and dumb. I think the skipper said that they were spinners.
We had a triple up this weekend but none got hooked but all 3 got sancochoed. I know of one captain that has released a dolphin and a pilot whale unharmed this year already. Another captain in CR told me if you ever hook one you never want to fight another fish. Said it was the best fight of his life. Very smart animal.
I got a call from another captain who said he watched a dolphin pick squids off his squid chain. I would have paid big bucks for that video.
We had one on our mullet dredge for about 3 minutes in the WMO two years ago. The temptation was too great and he finally picked one of the dredge. It was incredible to watch.
We had like a 1000 around the boat at night 2 years ago. While trying to catch squide or mahi. I snagged one. That was intense. They all flipped out. I have never seen line come off a reel like that in my life. We caught a sunfish a few years back on a chunk in the corner of the mouth. Thats another thing I wouldnt want to catch again.
