Left the dock at 4 AM and were greeted by seas that made me feel like the test dummy for Maytag washing machines. Slow run out to some numbers at 26 miles with no luck. Another move to some numbers at 42 miles. Then what the heck... we ran to the Swansboro Hole since we had already suffered enough. Lines in the water finally in the stream @ 10:45 am. Tanner Gray reminded me that this was his anniversary and that he had never caught a Wahoo... Me being from Virginia Tech and his wife from UVA... I told him that I would definitely put a hurting on a Wahoo. First fish on was his.. First strike within 15 minutes.. chugger bait in the prop wash... 39lbs 2 ozs.. The bite was fast and furious until we left. Short , long, deep.. It didn't matter. They we chewing. Epic bite, only managed to land 3 out of 13 strikes, one of which almost spooled a 50W. Lots of cut offs and pulled hooks. Loved the fishing, but hated the ride out and in. Took us almost 3 1/2 hours to battle our way back in only to be greeted by some storm s that had settled over New Rive Inlet. Scott Erickson caught the largest Beeliner I have ever seen on one of the few jigging drops we made.
