Boss man first check out the boat end as to what!!!? tripped that or shorted it before you plug it back in.
next you will need to lose at leased 2 feet of the cable to get around the heat damage to the wires, check the O ring seal on the female end for water ingress, I would solder the end of each wire before I put the new plug on, next check the ampage on the fuse box make sure that it is under 50amps, and not a nail that someone has replaced it with switch everything of in the boat and turn each thing on one at a time, might be teaching you how to suck eggs sorry dude but fire is fire, that has not happened for no reason and 50 amps is a lot of juice.

how does the receptacle on the dock look? if it is bad you may only be solving 1/2 the problem.

Have replaced a few. Use some antifouling grease on the screws when you replace the plug. When you trim the boot be sure not to trim to much if at all depending on the size of the wire. Dont'd forget to put the boot on first.
And lube it with some detergent or something to slide it on.
You will have power back on in ten minutes or MHC will be dark this weekend.... call if I can help.

That is the other half of the problem, for sure.

Usual cause is just dirt, salt, corrosion. Creates a little resistance at the connection, that produces a little heat, and it's a worsening situation from there.

That male end of the shore power cord didn't get like that without the female end on the dock also being damaged. NO ONE SHOULD USE IT UNTIL REPAIRED.

I had the same thing happen at the boat end of the shore power. Had to cut back the shore power cord and install a new female connector, and had to replace the entire shorepower inlet box on the boat. Not much fun.

    Marty,

Lot's of good info above. I had to replace one last year. Take a good hard look at the end that fried and you may very well see your problem. Probably some corrosion that caused the thing to arc. Make sure you cut back to GOOD wiring in the shore power cable and have at it.

Beaufort docks has its share of electrical problems usually a disaster during Big Rock. Could be on the dock recepticle end or coming from the boat next time you haul out check the thru hulls for burning around them. Better get that rig checked just in case that could burn that rig to the water line.

No matter how well or careful the repair, IMO.... the power cord will never be quite the same. Salt, water and corrosion will find it's way into any little imperfection of the repair. Also, if one end was corroded enough to cause a fire, then what does the other end look like?? If it were my boat, think I would just replace the entire cord, particularly if this one has some age on it. If a repair is in order, think I would hire a professional to do the repair if you're not totally comfortable and confident in doing the repair.

It's one thing if it's YOUR boat and you accept the responsibility of the repair....it's another if it's someone else's boat. Just my $0.02.

    Good luck!
