Dyeing witch hair and painting heads?

I was wondering if anyone has tried dyeing witch hair. If so any tips on how to do it would be great. I know I can get custom hair done but I'd like to try it myself. And I currently powder coat witch heads but I was looking for a different way that doesn't chip as easy and where I won't have to cure the heads. Any tips on painting heads would be great too. Thanks

I have never tried to dye the hair. I would think powder coating would be the best meathod to painting heads. I use finger nail polish though to do my heads.

I use the RIT liquid form...pour the die into a cup tall enough to die the hair as far up as you want it died. Dip the loose end of the hank in there and let it sit for a few seconds then hang to drip dry. Once dry...gently seperate the hair and rinse.

Dyeing crystal colored hair gives a sick luminescent look to the hair.
Painting the heads is not worth 35 cent....for that you can get epoxy coated heads that won't chip when they hit the deck....

Hint.....die the crystal hair with the orange RIT die and put that over a purple squid...

DO NOT DRIP THE DIE ON ANYTHING(including your wife's sink and counters)

Slayer- you are young enough that I will give you the best tip about dying the hair and getting it on the sinks and counters... DON"T GET A WIFE and it won't be a problem

i fool around painting the heads when I am bored in the winter, but truth be told, I don't think the fish give a darn about white heads and little red eyes and what not. I think it makes us happy, thats all. I have caught just as well on plain old lead heads.

Actually if you want a permanent dye you need to use a acid dye for the nylon hair. It is a very clean process and very cheap to do. I just buy the white or crystal hair and then dye it whatever color I want. Just do a search on line for acid dyes and you will get many hits. You only need a very small amount to dye nylon hair. Many craft stores stock it or can get it. A few ozs goes a long long way.
There used to be someone hear that used to advertise custom color hair. Here is an example. Acid dyes are activated by a small amount of vinegar added to heated water. I do a ream of hair at a time....Mark

Next thing you know you'll be saying naked baits catch as many fish as ones with those pretty hand tied witches

Naked baits don't catch fish, and I even tie witches for a living.Using nail polish and vinyl coating your heads will far outlast the powder coat process for chips and every day wear.

I hate powder coat. I would suggest a vinyl paint from component systems. http://www.csipaint.com/

The key it to prime everything and you wont worry about chipping and use a thinner. The paint is real thick and a quart will last you forever if your doing witch heads. Also if you use glitter mix it into a clear coat and dip at the end. I dont like mixing it into the paint. Clear coat also makes it that much durable.

Their glows and super glows are awesome. I buy paint from them by the gallons to dip all my parachutes, bucktails, and witch heads. I have a commercial account if you need anything.

if your ever at sunset stop by the espadon. I have a catalog with wholesale pricing. were fishing the next few days so i'll be around tonight through sunday
