    Downrigger placement question........

Have only 1 Penn Fathom DR with swivel base & rod holder insert - have the long boom extension, that can be shorten. Loaded with 250 PowerPro.

Plan on pulling Drone Spoons, Jig n Pigs or Sea Witches with Dead Cigar Minnows or Ballyhoos on planers (from #3 up to #6). Off the side & deep
while trolling 2 x Deep Diving Plugs from red circle, off the corners, in close (5 to 10 yards) using flatline clips. Fishing for anything other then Kings.

My Cat has 3 rod holders on each side marked in the picture.
Want to place DR in center green square, pointing out with short boom.
Can I successfully do this without causing a nightmare of tangles?

    Any suggestion would be appreciated.........thanks........ICM

    Hi Billy,
not an expert in this, but I have never been able to get a downrigger to work anywhere but in the stern most holder. Even with a long boom your line will be touching the hull or the motors during turns anywhere else.
If I'm not mistaken your twin vee is a roll out boat? Should be no problem at all installing more rod holders, or a DR base at stern?
    Good luck,
    Biscuit

Beat me to it Nick close to the stern no farther forward than between aft and centerline rod holders.

I agree with what Nick and John have suggested. The extendable boom will help you out a bunch and keep from tangling in the motor and rear of the boat especially when turning tight on top of bait. I would also say to try and get the DR back as close to the transom as possible. The planer on the DR will present some frustrating issues but will work. Timing is key running it like this when getting the bait down on the rod and letting the DR out at the same time. Hooking the planer directly to the DR when targeting kings works good and is almost like a manual bandit reel for hook and line "commercial style" fishing.

Could the DR long boom (green square) at a right angle to the hull, act as a mini outrigger for pulling teasers or daisy chain on top or near the surface.

Or pull 1 Deep Divers off the port corner & place DR in the starboard aft rod holder (red circle) at a right angle to the hull - going out, not back as drawn?.......Thanks .......ICM

If it were me i would go a foot forward of your aft rod holder straight off the side or at an angle.

I do use mine to pull a dredge or teaser but it is still off the back corner with boom extended to the side in clean water. I use the rod holder that is on my DR and lean it over to make it run a bait just above and behind the dredge or off to the side or behind a teaser.

1' in front of your back rod holder. You can see my swivel bases in this video. They are mounted perfect. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M__87OZu2aA
