    Question Double live bait rig?

This thread is motivated by Mark Ray's new Kingfish Eye painting which has a doube pogie rig pictured.

I have never fished a double live bait rig before but LOVE the idea! Does anyone have any feedback, stories, or recommendations for rigging one? Does anybody sell them? I prefer to make my own rigs so does anyone have any suggestions there?

    Thanks in advance for sharing!!!

Nauti, here's what you need and a pic of one. There's even a triple rig if you so dare to want the directions for that one also.
    Double Pogy Rigs
    ** 3'-4' of #3 coffee colored wire
** 1/0 x-tra heavy duty live bait hook
    ** 8"-10" #4 wire to a #4 4x treble
    ** 6" #4 wire to #4 4x stinger hook
This rig is best used with two pogies, Bluefish, Spanish Mackerel, Large Boston Mackerel, and any other dual application of small baits and the 2nd treble aids in more hook ups when using the larger baits. ** Excellent choice for that infamous prop wash bait .

i thinks its either a 55 or 60 lb spro 3 way swivel and a standard naked pogy rig one with a main lead of 14 inches and another at 8-10 inches twist up as if just tying a swivel on and go catch'um i catch more big kings on this rig than any other....

oh yea keep um close to the wash mine are 25-40 pulls off of the motors in the middle

    double pogy rig

I twist mine pretty much like the rig pictured above, but all the hooks are #4 trebles and the first two hooks are closer together. I like for the pogys to swim as much beside each other as they swim inline. Also, I try to keep it as close to the props as possible without them actually swimming into the props

Here's the triple rig set up.

    Triple Pogy Rigs
I ran across this rig a couple of years ago while reading an article in a saltwater magazine that revealed the secrets of the King Fishing pros. The rig is pretty complex and is very time consuming to make; however, the rewards have proven themselves to be extremely worthwhile.
To begin a 4' strand of #3 Malin wire is connected to a 1/0 Heavy Duty Live Bait Hook and a #4 4X Eagle Claw treble hook is added as a trailer using a 5" piece of #4 Malin wire. An 8" piece of #4 Malin wire then hangs from this "single pogy rig" and is connected to another 1/0 Heavy Duty live bait hook. Another #4 4X treble trails this live bait hook. Then the process is repeated over for the third set. You may be asking yourself what keeps the hooks from tangling and binding, that is all in how the rig is formed. The wire that connects each new partition is interlinked (as with all my rigs) with the wire about it in a manner that prevents the 1/0 hook from binding and throws the trailing treble off to the side so that the hooks do not tangle. This rig is Very effective on Big Kingfish and is a must for any serious tournament fisherman!!
A skirt can be added in two places on this rig, in front of the second bait and/or in front of the first bait. Just imagine the effect that two VIBRANT skirts and three live pogies dropped two feet behind the propwash will have on that lingering 45lb Kingfish. HE CAN"T STAND IT!!!!!!! This rig can be made with nickel plated hooks so that they will last longer in the saltwater environment; however, nickle plated hooks (black hooks) do have a shine that has the potential of turning that big Kingfish off the bait and on average they cost twice that of bronze hooks; therefore the rigs cost more to make. These are awesome fish catching machines!!!!

Better watch out you'll have some smokers chasin ya down now!!

I fish them alot in the fall when the bigger Kings are around on the East Side. I make mine alittle diffrent, stop by the boat next time your in town.. The thing to watch is your using multiple hooks so be carefull when handling the bait your fish.. I spent the whole AB tournement with a treble hook inbeded in my finger that I couldn't get out. Ken

For as many hooks that I've dug out of my hand over the years that little treble was larged in the joint of my little finger.. Even the doctor shook his head..LOL.. That loop trick wasn't even close to getting it out..

    A little different

I tie a 15' 30lb flouro leader to my regular line. I then thread the first live bait rig on through the swivel. Next I tie off the second live bait rig. Your first live bait rig slides up and down on the flouro leader and is stopped at the swivel on your second rig. Make sure that you use clean swivels (no corrosion) and I like to use a swivel with a big enough eye to pass the knot and stop on the swivel not the knot.

    Mark,

That is an interesting looking rig. I may make me a few like it to try this year. Personally I rarely fish double pogie rigs
because because I haven't been able to tell if there is a better hookup ratio. The less wire there is the less the King can see. A friend of mine uses double pogie rigs but with 2 stinger hooks and his stuff gets tangled up quite often. On the rig in your picture I like the single stinger, When we king fish more often than not the fish we get to the boat end up being hooked with the stinger. A large king will usually come up and swallow the whole bait and get hooked with the live bait hook. With the rest they seem to come thru the spread and slice the bait in half thus nailing the stinger. When they cut the bait and miss the stinger I put it in freespool to the bait stays where it was for the king to come back and get it.
