Lets be careful there LOL we do not want certain people as the keeper of the kingdom in a certain organization think people are using gaffs longer than 12 foot per the rules of that organization hahaha.
Nauti #4 is approx 40lbs depending on which brand you buy I think one is 40lbs and the other is 42lbs. #3 is a little lighter than what I will use for tournaments but will use it fun fishing when I know the smaller eating size kings are around, but EVERYONE has their own choice and it has to do with your confidence and the confidence in the product you are using. In Biloxi we will use only #7 80lb or #6 61lb. In 2007 they were cutting us off with #6 we lost several good fish I believe to them cutting right through the wire. We will also use 7lbs of drag there versus 2-4lbs here in NC/SC. Down there the kings have an attittude and hit with an athority. A 18lb king down there hits and runs like a 40 here in NC, this is just my take on what I have seen.
Yes we will chase the fish down, especially if the first move for the fish is to head offshore, that is usually a good sign of hopefully a good fish. The driver will work the angler to the front of the boat by maneauvering the boat while other lines are being cleared. Once lines are cleared if we have a 4th onboard we will also keep one line out with that angler holding the rod, the 3rd person prepares to communicate with the captain and the angler while preparing to stick "big mama" with the "cold steel" This is how we do and it is important for every person on the team to be able to do another persons job also incase someone else ends up on the rod.
it is important for the person running the boat not to get up on the fish too quick as you will get slack line and loose the fish. If you think about it this is the exact same technique your sportfisherman style boats are backing down except in reverse.
Then again I had one in Georgetown 2 yrs ago that ran 100 yrds stopped and came right to me in less than 3 minutes she was 31.75, so who knows. It is the good man aboves world and we just live in it we can guess but when we think we know he throws a curve so that is one reason we keep going back. Nauti if u ever want to fish just let me know would be more than happy to tag along or fish beside you.

I took a friend who had bought a boat last spring, he stopped by the house when he saw me preping the boat for a tournament in 2 weeks, he said man I can not catch any kings or mahi in my boat said we catch bottom fish but nothing else. Mind you he has a 21 foot boat so he is limited, I said meet me on Sunday at Little River (only takes me 1 hr 45 min to get there so we do day trips). We met I had told him to go buy some rigs I did not have time to show him how to tie them then, so being Oct I said make sure you buy a box of cigar minnows because we r fun fishing and I will only look for bait for about 1 hr. So he followed me out we looked for bait for about 45 min I said lets go, he tucked in behind me and we ran to the 90s about 8 miles out, we stopped 3/4 mile off the 90s I said you see that pack of boats work your way towards them at 1.5 kts and put your baits our like I showed you.
I swear to you the first line he put in the water he must have hit the king in the head it was not 20 yrds back when king took it, I then preceeded to call his girlfriend on the radio and ask if they happen to have a gaff onboard she said yes, well he had never gaffed a fish I gave him the technique I learned via words which if you calm the person down works everytime and I look over and he has this 1 ft long lip gaff LOL well he landed his first fish we pull over and give him one of our gaffs LOL and he proceeded to catch 5 more kings in the next 30 minutes. Needless to say he was excited.
Where is EMTAE (Charlie) now Charlie is the man when it comes to kings so we need to get EMTAE to give some input here.

Didn't know about the 12 ft rule. I haven't fished SKA in a while though. But the gaff is in two pieces.......HA

yea they have 12 foot limit on those and most are 2 pieces. And if you know anything about that certain organiztion you probablly know why I said it as a joke. I better hush before I get in trouble LOL LOL
SPRO came up with a telescoping 12 foot gaff that works very well. One of my 12 foot gaffs is permantenly together because of saltwater and corrosion I have tried everything to get it apart

    Nauti,

I would shy away from the seven strand. You can lose fish when their teeth cut thru a couple of the strands. While Kingfishing a tournament we were trolling at Shallotte inlet when a 100+ lb Tarpon hit. I was unaware that the rig was a 7strand(friend made it). Took 1 1/2 hours to get him to the boat and when my friend grabbed the leader to take a scale off the rig broke. Since Tarpon don't have sharp teeth like Kings the only thing i could figure is the friction from his small teeth severed the strands one by one. from what my friend said there were only 3 strands holding the fish when he grabbed the leader.
