Another good video Box! I've been there a few times myself. It pays to know how to maintain/repair your ride. I turn the wrenchs myself, leave major overhaul work to a friend (engine builder by trade). There is nothing like having peace of mind when heading offshore knowing your equipment is ready and you are capable of making a repair to get your family, crew, or passengers HOME safely.

Great video Marty. I lack in the mechanical field as well. Just can't seem to pick it up at all, now my dad can fix just about anything. Some people have it some people don't. Its a great gift to have especially when your 50 miles offshore with no one around. Nice work Capt. Brian and Billy getting the boat up and going.

That's some good work right there, been there dones that on smaller boats.
alwys keep a good tool kit on board as well. This includes wood pegs for leaks, epoxy, zip ties (you can never have enough of these) solderless electrical crimps that are heat shrinkable, boat life caulk, 3M 5200, etc, etc, etc. Gives piece of mind for minor repairs out on the ocean. Also, cannot forget the jump start pack. A must have !! Spare spark plugs and CRC. |

One day after losing my steering at the point 38 miles SE of OI here is what I did, as it could have been fixed for under $1.
I went to Lowes and stood in front of the plumbling accessories. First, I bought one of every size double-end barb fitting they had in both plastic and metal. Second, I bought every size hose clamp they had. Third, added a $15 dollar roll of safety tape from West Marine Forth, added some thin metal plating stuff that can be wrapped around stuff. Through in some zip ties. For under $40 bucks I was done. It has already saved me two days of fishing. If you get a pin hole in a hose, just cut the hose were the hole is and put in the connector. Permanently repaired. You don't even have to replace the hose. |

Another great video, and another day in the life of RUN-OFF.
Sorry that you had a breakdown, but at least the seas weren't up... As to mechanical ability, some of us "got it", and some "make movies".... Brian Last edited by ocnslr; 01-24-2006 at 02:33 PM.. |

How can you say you have a lack of mechanical ability? Perhaps engines but, DUDE! "ALL THE RIGGIN YOU DO"? All the knots, crimps, downrigger bridle building, ETC, ETC ? You gotta understand the MECHANICS of how stuff works to be able to get it right! & I think ya got that down pat!
A "few", years ago we had a leak on a fuel rail on an old 4cyl Navy buddah engine on the boat I was working. Wound up using a surge tube lure & 4 hose clamps to seal it off so we could get back in to the barn. Ya gotta be a jack of all trades when ya work on boats. Ya never know what's gonna happen when your 100mi from home. ![]()
