KINGINDABAG , i love keylargo rods too. great rods, good price, good looks, and GREAT warrantees.
me PERSONALLY... for this post...
I love shimano. never had a problem. but i am FAST becoming a HUGE avet fan.
Ive beat the crap outa my two tiags' , and the 20 tiag been with me 5 yrs, and i beat the CRAP outa it..
i fish it from the beach, ALOT. its just never missed a step.
but like i said i am FASTTTT becoming an avet fan.
love their reels, the company is good ,and the owners are good people too, talked to them the other day on the internet , good guys.
they make insanely good reels, at VERY affordable prices. compared to the internationals, and tiagras, they are MUCH cheaper, and i personally think that you cannot find a reel like that, for that much money, from any other company.
i own sx mini, and a little bigger avet. BOTH have caught 6ft sharks ,kings, decent size mahi , and i got a big cobe this year on my mini, they held up great.
i cant believe how good of a drag them lil avets have.
im planning on buying a topless 4/0 two speed avet for this season too.
SHIMANO! NO, PENN!! ... SHIMANO!!!!!!!! PENNNNNNNNN!!!!!!!!
penn internationals got 'em all...from 20's up to 130's...some are 25 yrs old...never a problem-ever !! i made a mistake quite a few years ago,and bought the shimano first generation tritons-they were junk-i sold 'em and bought the penn internationals...i do have a tld 20-it's a pretty tough reel...
tackle used... scallop boat catchin...i try to use the 20's and the 30's on graphite live bait rods....great battles !!! gotta have a few experienced guys with you to use them in that way...otherwise use the 50's on 6' stand up sticks...
trolling inshore of the canyons,i use the 30's and 20's....trolling out in the canyons,i use the 50's with an 80w down the middle....
avet reels-got no experience with them, but to me they look cheap, and i've heard of problems with them....one reel to avoid like kryptonite is the okuma lever drags-junk,don't waste your money....
last point-buy the absolute best equipment you can afford-even buy used, learn to take care of it and use it properly......
I have caught everything from Blue Marlin to Bluefin tuna on a shimano tld 25. I have said this before and I will continue to say it. Most folks rig their vessel for the anomoly and not then norm. Out of OC the average Tuna is 30-40lbs, the average white is 45-55 lbs, the average dolphin is 8 lbs and the average blue marlin is 250lbs. Hell even the average mako is 100lbs. All these fish can be taken on the tld 25. Sure it may take a little longer but thats half the fun. If we are targeting big Bluefins or big eyes or monster blues we will troll more 50/80. I like my Avet 50exw better then the my Penn 50s. I like the Penn 70vsw and I love the Shimano Tiagra 80w even though I do not own one yet.
My arsenal is 90 % Penn. I use single speed 50's and 30's on the troll. I do have 2 Shimano TLD 25's as well. The Penn's have never left me down (a few are over 12 yrs old). The TLD25 is also worth the money too. They are great when the kids are reeling in fish (because of the light weight). I would probably like to add 2 more TLD's, especially when trolling 20 to 30 fathom lines. All my spinning reels are Penn 750"s,...Love em.
Shimano in the 30 & 50 WLRS and a pair of TLD 25's and 16S for the offshore. Inshore for kings TLD15's and a pair of 12 LT's. Drags seem smoother on the Shimano but it's basically a ford / chevy thing. Parts are easier on the Penn & Avets seem to be on the upswing now especially with all the pricing policies. Time will tell.
Years back some mag did a test. They gave a bunch of charter crews a bunch of reels and told them to fish the crap out of them. Reel with least amount of failures and problems? Alutecnos. Tiagra was 2nd.
In don't own any alutecnos, but from what I hear they're strictly for trolling as their freespool ain't so great for flylining bait. The Penns and Tiagras I have are all bp'd and freespooled by either Cal or COFE, and while I prefer the penns for the 12-30 size 2 speeds, I think the tiagras are just better in the 50-80 size. The wet drag on big fish has been bulletproof and given me zero failures. The dry drags of Penn, Avet, and Accurate imo are just prone to messin up. I had a 30 and a 50 Accurate seize on me in Vallarta this past summer, and am not a big fan anymore. Penns are easy to repair, but take note, parts for Penn have increased over 150% over the past 2 years, new ownership means higher prices.
Avet, when they came out 5 years ago, had the worst quality reels on the planet. They even disconnected their customer service # for a period. A lot of it had to do with their manufacturing tolerances being so tight. A little tweak and their reels would just stop working. Like accurate they are also an aircraft manufacturing company. They've made huge improvements, but they have a long way to go. Their drag curves are really bad or really inconsistent in some of their reels, when the drag goes from freespool to 25lbs with just a nudge that's a problem. Maybe in a couple of years I'll take a look but definitely not yet.
