Dinner with friends

My wife just told me a story about her luncheon yesterday. When the bill came a newbie luncheon attendee whipped out the calculator and proceeded to cause a scene (with herself) trying to figure out the exact amount of her portion of the bill. After 5 minutes of mathimatical wizardry she also proclaimed to everyone that they all owed 33 cents each as their portion of the tip. She seriouly threw down 35 cents and waited for someone to provide her with two cents.

This reminded me of a dinner Nicho and I had last week in Mexico. We watched as the waiter brought the bill to 7 people from the midwest. One of the 7 asked the waiter to split the bill into four seperate bills. The waiter said no because they needed to identify this algorythim at the beginning of the meal. All orders were already in the computer together. Mr. Wizard of Oz proceeded to lambaste the poor waiter for having a stupid computer.

We all have friends like or maybe your are one of these types yourself. Lets here your tipping horror stories. The always amaze me.

ok, heres one, a couple of years ago, we took my motherinlaw out for mothers day, she lost her husband about 5 years back, and has a " friend" , well the bill comes my sisterlaw procedes to divy up the check, she splits it up between her and my wife, and then looks at my mil friend and says this is your part. needless to say i was horrified, its mothers day, if mil wants to bring her friend, then that is part of the tab imo, So i took the bill paid it myself, needless to say, i handle the splitting of the bill ( if there is one) with the sister inlaw now.

Mr brother in law starts the meal with a tip at 15% then begins deducting a % for each service infraction as he sees it. Slow to refill water... food not quite right... you name it.

When the Bog and I go to eat with him I make sure to nab the check.

My dad always says that you should base the tip on the meal itself, excluding tax. I know it makes a minimal difference, but I think my pop is being a skinflint. What is the ettiqutte on that???

I don't think the tax makes that much difference one way or the other.

I tip based on SERVICE and not necessarily the quality of the meal...the server has no control over the quality other than maybe food temperature. If I am not happy with the meal then I let them know and someone will usually make it right.

Funny but a couple of my buddies and I were discussing this same thing over a weekend dinner. Seems it is most often women who do this whole calculator, got to get everyones portion to a penny deal. What's up with that?

Its the same women who are obsessed with paying at the checkout counter with EXACT CHANGE, no matter how long they hold up the line

Their is one in every crowd

Have a hunting buddy who is notorius for excusing himself to go smoke or to use the restroom about the time the check is to be paid..we take it all in stride but bust his balls about it every chance we can

Tipping sould be based on effort and attitude. I am basicly a 20% tipper for good service, but I will not reward rudeness or lazyness. I have been in the food service biz in one form or another for years and I know the difference between slow service from someone who is overwhelmed by the workload and someone who doesn't give a shit. I tip accordingly.

I over tip. For no other reason than I know what they are going through. It really has to take some bad service for me not to give a normal 20%. I think everyone should have to wait tables one friday night of there life in a high volume restaurant. It sucks. Also try bartending in a bar when 30 people are screaming at you for a drink. A normal restaurant or bar goer only see's whats in front of them at that point in time. Its much like being a mate. There's alot to do before and after the day/shift is over that the customer never sees or does not know about.

I agree but what about when you go to a place that IS NOT BUSY and get ignored. Or a server acts like they are doing you a favor. IMHO not acceptable. There is no excuse for it.And if it were my place ,a reason for dismissal.

I agree with BEIBS, i usually tip pretty good, unless they are just a bad server and are lazy. I know how diffiuclt it is to work in a restraunt, and those people have to put up with a lot. Even some things that are not there fault or responsibility for instance not having something cooked right.

Being a mate i know what its like to get shorted on the tip, it sucks. There has been more than a couple o times that we didnt do so well and the charter handed me a very SHORT amount. Ya just gotta deal with it.
