Being that many of us on this board work for tips I feel 20% should be a standard in restaurants. If I'm with someone and they insist on picking up the check and procede to leave a poor tip I will slide a little extra to the server on the way out.
I don't mind tipping, but it must be earned. A tip seems to be expected no matter how lousy the service was. My wife wants to tip regardless, but I see it differently. At least put forth a little effort
Here's a good one for you. A couple of years ago a big group of us were in the islands and went out to a big dinner. When the bill came one of our buddies grabbed it, did some quick math, and told us how much each couple owed. We all threw in, happy not to do math as we had lost count of the cocktails that we'd consumed. The next day when we figured it out, we realized that our "buddy" had calculated it so that he didn't have to pay anything. Needless to say when he's around (which isn't much anymore) we don't let him go anywhere near the money.
Me, I usually over tip... Insures you get remembered the next time...
On split bills... I don't think I want to play any more after a couple years ago... I was fishing the Ma500 and I had the car. I don't like and never did like breakfast. The rest of the crew wanted to go get breakfast so I had to drive.
While I was there I decided to get the $3.95 light n fluffy pancakes (To match my disposition ) . The other guys had like shrimp and caviar western omlets and champagne mimosas... Come bill time I got hammered for like $25 bucks!!! Since it was the boats owner and boss I didn't think making a stink would do much to endear me so I just coughed it up. They can alk the next time!
i tip based on service, 20%+ on average. BUT!!!! there is one situation that arises where I take issue. The over 6 in your party rule. Whenever they add a gratuity to my check based on how many are in the party, I will ask the server to remove it from the bill. If they say no, then i will pay ONLY what they require. I have only had 1 server remove the charge, and received a much greater tip for doing so.
18 lb.Brown on fly: 6x tippet, 106 lb.Atl.Sail: Ft.Laud, 888 lb. Mako Cozumel, 950+ Blues St.T
To the initial poster, your dad is right....the tip is supposed to be based on the "pre-tax" dollar amount. (Acording to Ann Landers). Liquor....another amount suposedly....I don't know....I'm with a lot of y'all, I try and over-tip, due the fact I too have lived and died by the tips.
Once I took a group or family out on a full day charter (they said "a" a lot)....we couldn't do anything wrong.....we caught some 30-40 kingfish when we went kingfishing....caught 6 sailfish when we went kite-fishin'...caught a nice wahoo on a mono leader, caught a 40lb cubera amerjack fishing along with 10, 50-80 lb amberjacks, a 50 lb cobia while catching bait...saw the cobe and threw the right bait etc.....caught a 30lb balckfin on the kite...a 40lb 'cuda and also a couple of hammerhead shark too, and maybe some other extra-ordinary fishes. At the end of the day the charter leader guy came to me and proceeded to tell me how they'd all remember this day forever etc. etc., praising us etc., we took a hundred pics and he gave me a wad of bills that i stuffed into my shorts without lookin'....after they left I looked and it was like 18 wet one dollar bills. Wow, what a tipper huh?
For the next week or two I think I overtipped like crazy believing what goes around....but some folks just don't get it or it's not part of their culture, needless to say. After that, if they mentioned a certain letter during the trip's discussions we'd pass 'em off on someone else if possible.
But as to restaurant stuff, when in doubt, use 20% of pre-tax total. But if they are a no-nothing and don't care, I'll make it sting a little after an explanation....try and make them learn something from their mistakes.
Some just don't get it, they feel entitled...I'm a part time waiter now myself!!
Tipping is interesting, when I was guiding for salmon in Alaska my best tip was from a potatoe farm from Texas! My worst was from one of the richest men in Japan, go figure!! As far as food goes I always tip accordingly good service good tip bad service no Tip plain and simple and sometimes I feel for the waiter my wife is very demanding!!!PEACE
I refuse to break bread with cheap a$$'s, the bill always gets whacked up evenly and as long as the service isn't bad we tip well.
Its comical to see people break out calculators etc...
