This is my first post and i have lurked for a while, but i went straight to the box when i lurked so here it goes. I used to say you would have to pry the pole out of my cold dead hands before i gave it up. I have caught plenty of yellowfin up to 90 lbs , short stroke em on 50'S with a decent leader and the mates smacken'em cause theyre green. My first tuna ever was a 73# long fin thats right baby charlie tuna the true alby.My best night on an over nighter i put my 12 yellow fin in the box, that covered mine, the mate and cappys limit,on ice by 3 am. That was the night i graduated from junior to SLAYER, cause i killed em baby! Any way in 04 on the overunder with capt Trey and Pete we had a tripple hook up before we got the whole spread out in the lindenkole canyon off of south jersey on halloween weekend (we were blown out for the prior 3 weeks). One broke off , one pulled the hook , the third we stayed on.We are talking 50# stand up gear with a 60# floro leader fellas, i was 3rd on the pole thats right i was # 3 and up untill then we pretty , much gained a little here and lost a little more there. I was up and i was short strokin, and i gained much spools worth , the pig finally surfaced and it was a hog 300#+ bluefin . Then it happened the 40 minutes worth of pain i endured,Trey was in my ear tellin me how good im doing and how were gonna stick this pig and then it sees the boat, ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZby by baby. I always said you would have to pry it out of my cold dead hands and then i said words that will haunt me forever.......get it off of me...that would be the harness. We caught that beast after it burned throug 5 men and the report and pics are on the Overunderadventures .com website under the last report for 2004 i dont know how to post the pics or i would , but i found this site because of Trey and overunder. That huge wahoo and the shark wrangling video , my uncle bill and my buddy scott , scotty was on the pole for that monster hoo, and bill stuck em with the gaff. Sorry if its long winded Ill try to get some pics together, catch em up.

Yes- I know what it's like.
After an hour at 30lbs of drag I could see the look in my buddies eyes when he knew he'd been beaten. As he started to unclip he said I'm never going to live this down. I got strapped in and another hour later my legs were rubber and I gave up. Then the fish wore out the 3rd guy on our boat. It was a ***** of a 350lb bluefin. I can't tell you how relieved we were to get the gaff in that fish. It kicked 3 of our asses. I feel your pain....
Almost exactly one year after having my achilles transplanted and half my ankle rebuilt from cancer surgery I though I was ready for stand-up yellowfin action. We made quick work of the 30 pounders until I hooked into something a little more substantial. Now it was'nt a monster by any means, but I battled and boxed a 80#er on 30# leader in about 2 hours. Many times I wanted to give up the rod but I kept thinking if I could beat cancer I could beat a little tuna fish. This was only 4 months after I started walking again. Now the kind of tuna you are talking about no way could I prolly handle it today.
I have never given up the rod. My old man said "you'll land it or lose it boy".
Kinda like going to catholic school. No matter how old you get, there are some thing you cannot change.
Joe
I've never given up the rod voluntarily. I've passed countless fish to charters but that really doesn't count (its kinda hard to make a living by hooking the fish and NOT handing it off to a paying customer) As far as calling it quits, i was commercial giant fishing in Mass. and it was myself and my buddy on the boat. We had 2 fish hooked up at the same time, which becomes quite a zoo while my buddy is running the boat and trying to help while I'm trying to fight 2 giants simultaneously. Well after i landed the first fish (500lb dresser, 1 hour 28 minutes) i hopped over to the other rod and continued fighting that fish. After an hour on the second fish, he rushes into the cockpit and says you're shot, get on the wheel, take 5, get a drink and then get back out here. I do that get my wind and slam two 32 oz gatorades while he fights the fish for a couple minutes, but i came back out strong, fought for another half hour and put a 750 dresser in to top of a very exciting afternoon. So technically i didn't give up but i was thrown off the rod, but i didn't argue with his call either One of the guys i used to work for would give charters hell for passing rods. he'd say if the fish could pass the hook you'd never land one!! man up.
Thanks fellas, it sucked givin the stick up but we fought that fish for almost 3 hours and it beat the hell out of us.The fish ended up being 320#s and i know one thing for sure, i dont ever want to fight somthing that big on a leader that small stand up again. That day was the day i was sold on circle hooks too, because if it wasnt in the corner of its mouth she would have chewed through for sure.
THIS THREAD HAS SOME SERIOUS POTENTIAL OF BECOMING AN EPIC OF BROKEN BACK PROPORTION AND A COUPLE BRUISED KNEE THROWN IN ! WHAT A GREAT WAY TO INTRODUCE ONESELF! AND I WILL SAY I AM TRULY FLATTERED THAT YOU BROUGHT YOUR ACTION GIG TO MY WORLD!
I ALSO LOVE THE STORYHERE BY SHIPMATE BILL! AND I GOT A FEELING I WOULD LOVE EXCHANGING SOME PIT MOMENTS WITH HIIM....I HOPE HE WILL CONTINUE TO BRING US HIS OFFSHORE ACTION AS WELL HERE!
