I have passed one fish I can recall cuz I couldnt hang onto the rod anymore... but then, I dont get to play with BFTs... so I am sure it would be different if I had to fight one of those.
Now as to my ummmm..... shameful admission.
Well my best friend and I were shark fishing in Cumberland Sound on the Fl/GA border. Right out the gates we hooked a monster on a 12/0 senator w 130# mono. Russ was on the rod, I get him strapped in as the fish was steady spooling us. I toss the anchor ball, and man the helm as we tear off after it. Well 45 minutes into the battle, I am straight over the shark, and its not budging. We have cover 1 mile and then backtracked about 1/2 mile towards the initial hook up spot. Well due to the straight up nature of the fight, Russ is beat and asks me to take the rod. After a good bit of chiding, I suit up into a second Braid Brute buster harness, and then he passes me the rod.
Call it timing, or fate, or just bad luck, but the second I go to put the gimble into the pin on the belt, the shark surges, which in turn causes said gimble to come upwards into my family legacy!!! Well, as most men can attest, you have about .005 seconds before the pain sets in... that time was used up with me handing Russ the rod back as I fell to the deck in the worst pain I have experienced. After some sweating, swearing and vomiting, I remanned the helm where Russ finally said enough, locked down the drag, and we went for broke. Broke is what we got!!! Broke line, broke spirits, and almost broke legacy!

I'm with Rippy
If it's my fight on the rod I will not give it up.
I'll be in my harness strapped to the rod and I will not back down or give it up.
Rippy, Mike C, me or others will all do the same deal...We may die fightin it but we wouldn't do it any other way
That said when the fith one is on and it's my turn I may have to visit the head
and you'll just have to take it from the get go but I will not give you a used fish

I was like 13 at the time and we had like a half day trip before weather moved in.Our buddy was on a nice fish for 3 hours on his rig and about 5 minutes after he popped his off we hooked into this.I fought it for 2 hours and 40 minutes strait down on 40 pound flourocarbon and I pussed out and gave it up.5 minutes later I watched a 4-500 pound mako come under the boat and have lunch

240 and his bro Square Louie both gave up the rod after a few minutes on seperate occasions. One cried he was going to drop the rod in bc his hands hurt too much (SALLY!!)...240 was locked into the corner with his first Blue Marlin LMAO and whined "My knees are buckling..someone take this, someone take this!!" We still laugh at these guys
