If the Int. 80 is all you've got, then use it. A good freespool is nice to be able to trip the planer, but it isn't a necessity. You can trip it w/o ever touching the reel drag if you have to. So button down on your drag settings. If you lose freespool so be it. There are PLENTY of people who fish planers from Internationals and even 12/0 star drags. Are there better options? Yes...but don't sweat it...use what you have available.

There's also nothing written in stone that says you have to pull 16s & 24s. Plenty of fish hit the deck using smaller planers as well. It's up to you what you throw in the water.
