A Day with GOTTAFLYLEE...
Finally made it down to the coast this weekend to crank up Merry marlin's engines after two months... As we had a report of a 78" Bluefin caught at the 1700 Rock saturday we headed out for a morning of trawling but had no signs of fish in that area. By noon the wind picked up and we went on the bottom to take a limit of gags an four kings and the boys played with some FAT Alberts....
No camera on board but we hooked a stingray by the tail that was so big that it would have made some of those inshore june monsters look small! We ended hand lining it up... We were greeted back home by the community goat mower, only in Marshallberg would you see that! Anyway back on subject... As Capt Lee was in Harkers Island we thought this was our chance to meet another Legend from Wilmington and he accepted to come out for dinner Sunday evening. What a pleasure listening to this Gentle Fisherman talk... He comes after several generations of watermen and hunters and his experience of these NC waters are quite an inspiration for the boys and myself. We had a fun evening and he even showed the boys how to unblock the steering of the duck boat as they were going to hunt in the morning. Originally we were going to take him fishing monday but the forecast wasn't too good so he said lets fish inshore on his Southern Skimmer. In the morning after a quick cup of coffee we put the boat in the Marshallberg harbor and looked at a couple spots that usually produce for us around Thanksgiving. The trout or puppies weren't there but we did find a few just off the old Jarret Bay place... It was my first time fishing with mirrolures and the Capt. was at 5 to 0 before I hooked my first fish! I sure knew how to catch squirts on the bottom though... The boys had engine troubles 4 miles up to the banks and we were about to go and meet them after an hour when they finally cranked it up and made it home... We all took off together for middle marsh but the fish weren't around then Beaufort inlet to try the seaside of Shacklefor but the same thing it wasn't trout hour there. Within minutes the wind dropped and Capt Mirro-Lee as the boys nicknamed him took off for the jetty. It was the usaul parking lot but he chose a good little spot! Straight away the Mirro-man was on and the boys followed. All I was good for was foul hooking spot or pigfish! Patrick shifted to a jig head and after Capt Lee showed him how to tap tap wack and the show was on! I believe that Capt. Lee's team out fished the other boats around with several limits and we kept only 4 fish between 19 and 21". I sometimes wonder why the size limit isn't raised to at least 16". They would probably all be at least that size... The weather had turned from pretty windy to slick calm, can't ever predict what will happen! The day before it was the opposite... We headed back home for some lunch and stopped at a magic spot that didn't produce. Maybe in a day or a week, that's fishing! He has been fishing elsewhere lately and you would be guaranteed a bunch of fish. This man thinks like a fish and we were amazed at how he has every single mirrolure available for every different situation... Thanks again Capt. Lee for this wonderful time on the water and we are know looking forward to having you soon on the Merry Marlin... MM |

Nice team work gentlemen. Lee definitely has it figured out. You can see that in his eyes behind the Costas in that last picture.
