    Daisy chains and spreader bars

I have been using (trying to use) spreader bars and daisy chains. This look nice and make lots of noise but I have not caught many fish on the lines with these deployed. I have had the hook in the last squid, a few feet behind the last squid off of a swivel up to about 18'.

Do most people put the hook in the last squid or run a line behind them, and if you run a line behind or off the swivel in the last squid how far back do you run it?

You def need to put a hook in the last bait, some people like to switch it up and run a green machine behind a rainbow bar or run a rainbow illiander/seawitch w/ ballyhoo or even an off color with ballyhoo. Its trial and error with that, as far as 18 inches go I don't know if I would put my hook bait that far from the last teaser squid on the center line. Whats more important is to make sure the bar itself is not dragging and spalshing in the water, this makes a non-realistic motion in he water that I believe deters the fish. Sometimes to elminate that bar splashing in the water is as easy as line placement. I like to run my bars on the short riggers, of course you need to tighten the rigger clips but this is very effective. Fishing the NE Canyons it is imperrative to run spreader bars espically GreenMachine bars and Rainbow bars.

Marsimi; Usally on any spreader bar or daisy chain the last bait(squid or hoo) will have a swivel. It's is your choice to add another squid or different color squid or a larger squid to that set up. With ours bars we normally change to a different chase bait. For example if I'm running 9" green squid on the bar my chase bait might be a Black and Purple streaker. Normally the chase baits have a 2 to 3ft leader on them.

I would try a naked ballyhoo behind your squid chains.

Gents - thanks for your replies. I will make a few changes. For spring YFT out of Morehead do you run these or stick with seawtiches and ballyhoo?

Marsimi….Spreader bars and daisy chains are valuable weapons to be pulling behind your boat. This is my take on spreader bar 101. The bar wants to be out of the water (no mater being trolled from rod tip or rigger). Basic way to help with this issue is to always run your bar on the top of or just in front (towards the boat) of the top of the boats wake wave. Matters not weather its wave number two or number five. The teaser squids will swim in the wave and the bar will be suspended above the down angled face of the wake wave.
NEVER RUN YOUR BARS IN THE TROUGH OR ON THE BACK SIDE OF THE WAKE WAVE.
The last squid on the center/main line will have the hook. Thie is commonly called the “chase bait”. Chase baits can be larger/longer then the teaser squids and should be a contrasting color with the teaser squids. Good example in reply by TOMMYV. Pitch bait’s bally suggestion is very good as well (be it behind the chain or the bar).
Good rule-of-thumb for the separation between the last teaser squid and the hooked chase bait is this: Two to two-n-a-half times the spacing between teaser squids.
    Hope this helps.
