    CROSSING THE BAR

IF YOU HAVE BEEN THROUGH OREGON INLET ENOUGH TIMES YOU HAVE NO DOUBT SEEN A FEW BREAKERS. I HAVE CERTAINLY HAD THE EVER LIVING SHIT SCARED OUT OF ME.....ON THE PARTICULAR DAY I REMEMBER MOST.....IT WAS SLICK-CAM....WITH THE EXCEPTION OF A 10' GROUND SWELL. WE CAUGHT A SET PERFECTLY AND I'D BE LYING IF I SAID I DIDN'T NEED A NEW PAIR OF SHORTS AFTER THE FIRST ONE CRACKED OVER THE BOW. HARD TO DUCK DIVE IN A BOAT....

    MOVING ON A FEW YEARS....
WHILE GOING THROUGH OLD VIDEO I FOUND A CLIP I THOUGHT WAS HILARIOUS FROM A DIFFERENT DAY WHEN WE TOOK PAUL(JPR CUSTOM) AND HIS DAUGHTERS TILE FISHING...
CAPTAIN RON TIMED IT WELL (READ....GOT LUCKY NO SETS CAME) AND WE SQUEAKED THROUGH NICELY. STILL A PRETTY COMICAL VIDEO....THE GIRLS WERE NOT ACCUSTOMED TO THIS TYPE OF INLET EXIT.

The next bite on a jig.
I have seen 60' carolina boats go sideways on it. Its all about timing.

One day I surfed a really big wave for about 2 miles coming in there in my Grady. I was on the front, but then repositioned to backside of the wave in front of me while crossing the bar, because they started breaking.

You couldn't even see the bouys that day. They were gone. Funny thing was, it was flat as a parking lot on the ocean, just the combo of easterly meets outgoing tide was really super big.

It always amazes me how calm it is once getting across the bar! 10 foot to no foot just like that. Great video.

Been through plenty days when the last thing I was thinking about was a video camera.
The day in the video wasn't too bad at all. They were certainly breaking though....if you look ahead at the waves Spray took....you will agree Captain Ron did fine with that old slow single screw.
I'll post some more footage later.

Especially with a GPS on the blink and an overheating engine.

There's a 77' trawler aground in the inlet right now...can be a tricky spot

I'll never forget coming in one day with the rest of the fleet. As you neared the bar, it was constant spray, making visibility extremely difficult. This made it intense as all the boats were on top of each other looking for the back of a wave to ride in single file. I don't know how big it was, but definitely well over 10'... As we went under the bridge, it felt like a car had been lifted off you everyone was so relieved to be in the sound.

Whats really interesting is getting in the train heading out. Its always a experience. You better keep up with everyone and don't dare get out of line. I don't care who you are especially in a smaller boat there is always a pucker factor running the crack and then through the inlet. We always try to hit the inlet before all the big boys get there. All last year we ran the inlet an hour before sunrise. You just have to keep all eyes forward and take a peak at the radar now and then. When the big boys head through the inlet it is far worse for a small boat. It becomes a huge washing machine after you go under the bridge. Add a out going tide and a little NE wind and it really gets interesting. We have been out where you loose the boat in front of you because of the swell!! I have never done any video because it is always dark when we go through the inlet. Great video. I like the way she just powers through!! I know Alex is ready to go!!......Mark
