My guess was that when the swivels were made, they were bent too fast running through the tooling machine, and the heat created a weak spot, or microscopic tension cracks.
Its only a guess, and you'd think that all of the bends would be just as brittle. Maybe they are, but it just so happens that is the bend that breaks at the first stress. Could be as simple/dumb as they were in a rush to make them, and they sped up the machine to to make a lot more, and were using cheaper wire from a differant Asian vendor
