    Crimps: Which Type & Why?

I was taught when I first started offshore rigging that single sleeve aluminum crimps where the way to go. I specifically like the jinkai aluminum crimps, but this past winter GBFT fishing I was turned on to double sleeve cooper.

I can tell you i know for a fact that my double sleeve copper crimps where dead on balls 100% as we did a number of tests at the dock on blow days.

My question to you is which crimps do you prefer?

    Double Sleeve or Single
    Cooper or Aluminum

    any why?

I do have to mention that im not always as vigilant as I should be with my crimps and know that the proper way should be done with a micrometer and properlly calibrated crimping tool. but for the sake of our argument lets keep it to hand crimpers and no micrometer.

MY DAILY MOTTO: NO CRIMP FAILURE

99.99999 % OF CRIMP FAILURE IS ACTUALLY MORE RELATED TO HUMAN ERROR OR WORN OUT CRIMPER TOOL MALFUNCTION

I PREFER DOUBLE COPPER CRIMPS AND ON OCCASION HAVE USED A SINGLE ALUMINUM BUT I SAID OCCASION

FROM 1.0-2.2 ....IT'S DOUBLE COPPER FOR ME AND IF MY LEADER SIZE GOES BEYOND 2.2, I THEN GO TO DOUBLE ALUMINUM OR POSSIBLY SINGLE SLEEVE

I THINK THE IMPORTANT SEGMENT OF CRIMPING IS THE CRIMPER ITSELF

THE BLUE HANDLE JINKAI (JAPANESE MADE)CRIMPER SEEMS TO MAINTAIN LONGER HEAD ALIGNMENT AND THE SLOTS SEEM TO NOT WEAR OUT AS FAST OVER THE KOREAN/CHINA MADE MODELS

THE COUNTRY OF ORIGIN IS STAMPED ON MOST CRIMPERS

I prefer the doubles for the 49-strand cable rigs. I use the single sleeve aluminum for mono. That's the way I was taught, & I've never had a crimp fail.

    swaging

For almost all applications down here on the Baja we've found that a good swage connection is better than crimping. They are different. Crimping puts a dent in the metal crimp, swaging results in uniform compression of the fitting. In either case a good tool, and the right size of fitting makes the difference between good and bad connections.

    Hmmm lets see...

Double copper for mono from 120-300

Double copper for 49 strand cable

    Single Aluminum for 300+ mono

I am pretty plain jane with what i use.

Box is right, crimping accounts for most of the failure. Non-flared ends, over crimping, and improperly sized crimps.

It's easy to F up the single sleeve aluminums. The coppers align real nice in a quality crimper. Aluminums need a little more deliberate placement.

Copper double sleeves for me . I prefer to use the Braid HD crimper tool as it has a ratchet mechanism that will disengage when the proper pressure as been applied.

Double barrel copper and a $35.00 dollar offshore angler crimper. Why? Cause I have never had a failure with either of them. Over 400lb I use the single alum. (ie outrigger lines)

I always look back at this site from time to time as as refresher for swaging/crimping. Thanks JMS several years ago for telling me the site address. www.leadertec.com

I use a regular offshore angler crimper for 300# under and the one in the pic for over 300#.

I prefer the copper double for smaller leader diameters because they seem to be more deliberate in lining up the leader for proper pressure when crimped.

I like the aluminum for heavy leader because the heavier leader is easier to line up in the sleeve and get a better crimp.

49 strand ALWAYS use double. If you look at the way 49 strand cable twists its important to line them up properly and double crimps seem to do this best.

John: If you're reading this, you should prob carry this in the store.

For us, doubles for cable, single aluminum for mono. We use a quality swager. Hand swager on boats, bench swager for production. We use the swages made by the companies that make our leader material. It's good advice to regularly check the gap adjustment on any swager.

Over many years and literally thousands of hardcore trips, I do not recall a swage ever failing, except a few cable ones...never mono.
