Crimpless Bridle???
i'm fimiliar with the "normal" Box set-up for the planer bridle, but i was wondering...are there any disadvantages using a crimpless bridle system?
got about 600-700 yards of 130# backing with 250 yard of 150# braid (dark green) on a tiagra 80. can i just tie two loop knots (31 inches apart) about 120ft from the end of my braid? then use a french clip (or similiar) where the braid ends and run a normal 12-15ft mono leader to my lure? are there any disadvantages using braid as the majority of the leader to the lure AND are there any disadvantages not have the mono/crimp bridle system that Box has designed? |

I didnt think that was hateful. I though he was hopinbg the guy might come up with a new better way and share for everyone to enjoy.
Now on back to the topic. DRY_AKU I would like to see the bait alittle further back from the planner myself. Im not sure why but it seems like the tunas and wahoos like to have the bait away from the planner say 80 feet atleast one hundred feet is better. Now if you are using it to troll sharks just put the hook on the planner and you will catch them. Seems the big toothy ones like to eat the planners. I hope this helps. Im just like you I like to tweek things to make it my own. |

I think Marty is dead on - you can copy what works and have good or even great success, but like many other things in this world, there is probably no single right answer.
Sea Draggin put up a great post for his bridle rig using a bimini for the lead loop and knots and long line clips. I'm sure you can find it in a search. I'm kinda partial to the crimped bridle for a couple of reasons; a) spectra line is great stuff until you nick it under tension - it just goes pop. I'd rather cut back a few feet of braid daily than 100+ ft. I don't want frayed braid to cause me to lose the whole rig. b) I can have spares pre-rigged and sitting on hand reels so I can quickly get my planer back out when (not if) I nick the braid and lose the whole mess. I don't have to worry about measuring out 132' of braid and retying the knots on the water. All I have to do is tie a surgeon's look in the mainline, cats paw in the spro and a pair of crimps to make the forward loop. Back in the water in less than 5 mins. If you want to use a knotted braid bridle go for it. I've made a few samples, and I'm not happy with the way the knots go through the tip guide. Maybe you can create a better mousetrap.

to me it seems the strenght of the knots aren't really a factor..so that covers the crimpless bridle part. i guess what i really would like to know is would the 120ft of dark green braid off the planer (or the clip where the lure leader is attached) reduce my chances of getting a strike, due to the visibility of the line, clip, etc? |
