Offshore has a good system. I am using a single loop though with 130 lb spectra to make the windon and a loop splice in the end of the spectra off of the reel. The leader is 100 feet long and the use a spro to transition to wire. I am using long line clips and have been very pleased with this setup for over a year now(1 in the splice loop and one in the windon loop). I am using a smaller planer rod setup so it can be used standup so we have been pulling no 8 and no 12 OS planners. I could not find a rod that was a good compromise between a planner rod and standup so I built one with some input from offshore and others. So far it has worked great and I have been very pleased. No crimps is the way to go. Look at some of Seadragons posts regarding this subject he has a similar system and has good results also. As Wahoonbox says play with variations and you will come up with "your" way. Nothing is more gratifying or fun than catching a nice fish on a system including the rod that you have designed and built. Besides you get lots of invites to fish when you have a good system.
Offshore's videos are a great place to start to learn the wind-on art.

Some planner rods are built with I believe they are silicone carbide guides. They are built for fishing with spider wire and such that would cut into a normal guide or roller. I believe the only thing stronger is a diamond.I have been cranking snap swivels in and out of guides for a whle and never had this be a problem. I have had the whole guide insert fall out on a Gloomis spining rod before.

You will never "chafe" a silicone carbide guide. Heck, you'll likely never chafe any ceramic guide.

But you should keep in mind that the harder and more expensive the guide ring material the more brittle it is. SiC rings are extremely brittle and will crack if abused. That crack can possibly chafe your line.

Does this mean I wouldn't use SiC? Heck no. I've used silicone carbide on every planer rod I've ever built with the exception of those that have roller guides on them.
