    crimping question

I thought all my crimps were good till last saturday

We broke off two nice yellowfin, one of which was about 12 inches from the steel

I can only question the crimps, no other crimp failures ever before those two.

What slot are you using for 1.0b double sleeves
and what slot are you using for the 1.3 double sleeves

    Thanks,
    Taylor

    Some things to consider:

    1) Are you over crimping?

    2) Right size crimp?

    3) Are you leaving a "flare" at the end of each crimp?

    4) Is there enough play in the hook loop?

    5) Chaffing gear?

    Quik check list:

    - Where did the break take place - in the crimp or in the mono near the crimp?
    - Age of rig
    - Leader breaking strain
    - Size and type of crimp that was used
    - Crimping tool that was used

    - Any photos of what was left of the rigs may help in ID.

    Thanks guys,
I was using 80lb seaguar fluoro
and they were crimped with 1.0b double leader sleeves made by sea striker. the crimping tool was a standard sea striker hand crimper. I think that the leader broke a the crimp going to the swivle. My best guess was that its was over crimped.

My question is what slot do you use for the 1.0b double sleeves
    is it the .01-.05mm, .05-1.0mm?

    Thanks

Your best bet is to test a few in you garrage. Crimp some loops and slip them over your hitch ball. Put on a pair of gloves and pull on them.

I have a suggestion though. Think about getting some Jinkai or Momoi oval crimps.

    Good luck
    Bert

    Great advice Bert,

I do the same, except I use a 300lb deer scale between the two to make sure the leader is breaking at 100% strength. These scales are inexpensive and can be found at any sporting goods store.

I recently ran into a bad spool of red label Seaguar. Just a thought.

THIS REALLY CONFUSES ME HERE A BIT......YOU USE THE WORDS "I THINK IT BROKE AT THE CRIMP"....I CAN'T HELP YOU HERE UNLESS YOU KNOW EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENED....NO GUESSING

I WANT TO GIVE YOU MY VIEW AND MY VIEW IS NOT THE ONLY WAY BUT HERE GOES

IF YOU DO NOT KNOW WHERE THE BREAK OCCURED I CANNOT HELP YOU...SORRY...

BUT WHAT ROD/ REEL WERE YOU USING?

I SEE YOU HAD 80LB LEADER AND A 1.0 DBL BARREL CRIMP WHICH IS CORRECT....

DO NOT FEAR A DOUBLE BARREL CRIMP BRO......THOUSANDS OF CAROLINA ANGLERS USE THESE EVERY DAY INCLUDING MYSELF.....AND I HAVE NEVER HAD A CRIMP FAILURE....NOW I HAVE HAD HUMAN ERROR ASSOCIATED WITH A CRIMP....BUT THE CRIMP ITSELF WILL NOT FAIL YOU

DRAG...THAT IS THE NEXT QUEST'.....CHECK THE DRAG ON THE SAID ROD AND THEN REPORT BACK

ONE THING I HAVE OBSERVED OVER YEARS ON THE WATER...IMPROPER MATCH-UPS OF ROD/REEL/LINE/LEADER/SWIVELS........MAYBE THE SWIVEL IS OVERSIZED OR THE LEADER IS TOO UNDERSIZED FOR THE MAINLINE OR REEL ETC ETC

IF YOU ARE WILLING TO DO SOME BACKGROUND WORK AND RETRACE YOUR STEPS HERE, I CAN HELP YOU

JINKAI BLUE HANDLE CRIMPERS ARE THE BEST CRIMPERS I HAVE EVER USED....PRICEY....BUT THEY GET ER DONE.
