Hey Tim I need your profesional opinion. I have a nice mauser k98 short stroke action sitting hereIm looking to build on. I was going to do a .308 win but I have been seeing alot about the 6.5 lapua and was wondering if you have had any exposure to this round? I want to build another AT&T gun. They say the the 6.5 has the same power and speed as the 308 but a much flatter and longer trajectory. I just wanna get the straight poop without alot of marketing BS. Im cutting a custom laminate stock and gonna use a 1.25" full bull barrel. The 6.5 is mucho pricy to shoot like $50 for 20 rounds I do reload but you still have the initial investment and the cost of bullets. So unless its really unbelievable I dont want to spend the money. Im still a cheap ass.
By here, I mean at work. I'll give you the quick response before I look into the 6.5 more.
I don't have a whole lot of experience shooting the 6.5 lapua. ie, I've never shot it. The .260 is a round I would really like to get some experience in though. I've heard a lot of good practical feedback for the round. Now the .338 is a different story and a round that I love! Second favorite behind the .300 but I think that's just because I shoot it and know it so well.
I'm not sure how the numbers will play out, I'll take a look when I get home, but I can't imagine it having quite the same power at range as some of the larger rounds, .308 or .300. Will it have "enough" power for wind at range...it may.
I would imagine you are spot on with price though! It's a new round and not coming out in mass yet so it'll be a pretty penny I'm sure.
Definitely let me know if that's what you're going with. I'll have to come give her a test run!
I guess it depends on the type of shooting you are gonna be doing. I have shot this round a little while back and I was impressed with its performance. I would do a little searching online before you make a decision b/c there is some good info out there which may help you make a decision. I am still very partial to the .300 winmag but that isn't b/c I like to hunt big game. It has a ton of knockdown power and it is an easy round to manipulate. The 6.5 is worth taking a look at though b/c it has some great characteristics. I attached an article that compares some of the rounds you are considering and it is pretty informative as far as performance of the 6.5x47.
Thanks guys but I gotta stick with the short rounds for this one like the .308, 6.5 .243 and I think I can use the .300 WSM (win short mag) Im not sure of the length but Im pretty sure it will work. The action I am using is a short action mauser it doesnt have the length for the .300 winmag, or I believe unfortunately the .338 lapua. I really want a .338 but funds are limited at this point so I gotta play with what I got. I am looking for a M,K98 large ring long action mauser action or entire rifle on the cheap if someone has one they want to get rid of. Like say an old crusty 8mm argentine mauser with dark crappy barrel. I know you can pick up good shooters all day for $250 or less but I hate tearing apart a nice old gun, a crappy one thats another story so please send all unwanted orphaned mausers, mosins, enfields, or whatever to me, they will be well loved and appreciated. Ive got a friend of mine whos gonna press the stock for me out of maple laminate, he makes skateboard decks for some of the big brands and these things are sturdy. Im gonna do the do the inletting, bedding, with adjustable length stock, and cheek rest, with a full floating barrel. Im on the fence with having the barrel fluted or not. The bad thing is Im gonna have to find a new place to shoot I only have 500 yds on the back yard range.
I like the short mags a lot for hunting. I use a .270 wsm for whitetail here in NC. Hard to beat the .308 for all around use though. Buy it about anywhere, pretty cheap and there are a ton of round and reload options. I like the .243 also, great med distance round for medium game. I've shot it out west for pronghorn and liked its performance. Looking to get one soon for my daughter for deer season here.
OOOhhhhh I forgot about the .270 wsm real flat. Im still thinking .308 just for the price but I really want serious long range accuracy. I want something accurate to 1000 to 1200 yds. .
Yeah, unfortunately all the short mag rounds aren't cheap.
I certainly miss shooting that much!! One of the bad things about coming off the teams, no range time.
The .270 WSM is a really nice round. Hunting wise for medium game, it's my choice by far. I've taken two elk with it out to about 400m. One in some CRAZY wind, at a sick up hill angle.
how about the 6.5 Grendel...factory ammo (Black Hills and Alexander Arms) and plenty accurate out to 1000+...ballistics shows supersonic out to 1200 yards...flatter and less wind drift than the 308...
