Sometimes stalking cobia can require a little stealth... would that make it a
......cunning Ling quest?![]()
Looks like we are going to have a good year down here. A guy that lives a few houses down caught a 50 pounder yesterday.
Charter or with friends? I know DJ likes to bottom fish and whoever is with him they sure have a pretty day to be off.Originally Posted by WAHOONBOX
Day before yesterday, Tues., Cobia fished the tied in the morning and evening on the tide. Tues. morning we caught two fish, one was just barely legal, turned him loose, the other probably about 35 lbs. Tues. night however is a different story........as far as size......... 1 fish, 82 lbs. in the sack, then under the knife, then into coolers, then onto the dinner table...... Wed. morning, left bright and early in search of ol' big mouths. (Grouper) Caught bait at 4:00 am, no problem, started to run out towards the "secret ledge", and stopped, couldn't pass up setting up for the top of the tide at daybreak for mister cobe again. Daylight cracked the horizon.............1 minute..............2 minutes later, double header. Both fish met the steel. With them on ice, mere 60-70 lb. class, pulled the hook and was off to the big mouth hole. 38 miles to go once I cleared the inlet...a fair ride, light east to south east winds on the bow quarter, made 35 knts. no problem, slowed down to look around just shy of my original destination, and there they marked, the mother load of mother loads. Blacks, Gags, Reds, Firebacks, Scamps.........and um........um........more Cobia.!!!!!.......................................................................................................................................................................................................................Six hours later,.....headed back to the hill, however once reached back to shore line, once again the tide was just perfect, I had to set up and try them again for an hour or two. 30 min. after I put the baits out, BIG HOLE......BENT POLE. That's right, another got to look at my ugly mug up along side the boat. Made it back to the dock about 8:00 last night, re iced the catch, grabbed the keys to my truck, and headed for the shower........figured the catch, being well iced and my boat that looked like you smeared chum from bow to stern could wait till the morning since I wasn't booked today..........Phone rings, ARE YOU OPEN TOMORROW....why sure I replied as I turned around and went back to the boat for the MASSIVE cleaning of fish and rig. 2:30 am this morning I made it home for a quick shower, coffee and pee.......and back to the boat I went again to catch bait prior to today's trip, picked up my charter at 5:00 this morning and headed back out to the area where I caught the last one last night. Set up..........1 minute..........2 minutes.....Rod doubles over, drag goes to screaming...........and the most awful sight to see to a true die hard ling fisherman, a 350 lb. plus logger head turtle surfaces.....DOWN CURRENT, 300 yds off............YIKES.........ONE HOUR LATER......um..um, had him up to the boat and released him with the de-hooker, the damn things head was as big as a basket ball. Set the stuff out again, whamo, we come tight again, this would be the right species, however just a pup. About 30 inches. Took picture and let him go. 10 sharks later and yes another damn turtle, similar in size. We called it a morning as the tide left us.
It has been an extremely fun yet exhausting last few days, wouldn't trade my office view for nothing........ Thank you for listening. Capt. Brian.
Great stuff, Brian. Thanks for sharing it!!
