I switched to monel 2 yrs ago & IMO monel is superior to copper ( for me) for the following reasons:
No green gunk;
can cut to the length I want;
Is stiffer and larger diameter than copper allowing easier push through the break (when no pins are used);
Is a bit heavier than copper;
can keep track of a spool easier in the boat than a tube;
no more wire strands coming out of the tube littering the deck of the boat;
looks better on the bait
copper will get the job done fine, I just like monel better so that's what I buy.
I use both. For pins I use copper. We go through so much stuff that price alone dictates using it. In my non pins I use monel . It pierces and penetrates much better and lasts longer...
For the simple fact I can make it whatever length I need. I always found the copper rigging wire to be too short. Only to have it reinforced when I took Mary's class and learned to rig a guac. The more you have the stiffer and more secure you can get the hook.

Have tried them all over the years. Never been a big fan of the spring. Used copper most of the years I have fished but will be using monel now. I like the rubber bands too but enjoy the way the bait looks and rides with a wire wrap be it either monel or copper when using mono rigs. I will agree rubber bands are very quick and easy especially when using wire rigs.
I got a roll of copper and monell, the copper has less memory and mure pliable than the monel which I found works a little better when rigging smaller baits but doesn't pierce as well as the monel so I don't use it much, plus the green gunk.
