THRESHER? THAT HAS BEEN A WORLDWIDE QUESTION HERE ON THE VIDEO.

THE TAIL WAS SHORT...I WAS INSIDE OF TEN FEET FROM THIS RASCAL

I HAVE REC'D 1,000'S OF MAILS ABOUT THIS OVER THE LAST YEAR....THRESHER, GREAT WHITE, POOR BEAGLE...LONGFIN MAKO.......(EVEN A HAMMERHEAD: THERE IS DUST ON THE LASER AND IT PROJECTS A RECTANGLE IMAGE ON THE SHARKS HEAD IN THE VID IN ONE FRAME)

WHILE I HAVE NEVER CAUGHT A THRESHER OF ANY SIZE....I DEEM THIS NOT A THRESHER FOR THE TAIL WAS NO MOTRE THAT 36" ON THE TOP SIDE

AND BACK TO THE ORIGINAL POST HERE......

THIS JUST IN........$15.00 FOR THE 77" TUNA LAST WEEK THAT CORED OUT AT 195#
COULD BE WE ARE LIVING RIGHT...OR COULD BE WE ARE DOING SOMETHING RIGHT......WHO KNOWS?

idea

I have an idea we can experiment with. I'm sure the marine fishery guys know how to do this, but I'm sure I can do it also. ?legal Next season, we'll bring the slob on board and start him an IV and flush him with cold fluid helping to preserve him just as we do with transplanted organs!

After bleeding, lots of ice is the "trick". I generally go offshore with 300 pounds of ice each trip along with several pounds of salt. You really can't have too much.

NORTH ...POON
SOUTH....LIP/HEAD GAFF

WHY? BECUASE IN THE SOUTH WE HAVEN'T HAD THE YEARS OF EXPERIENCE TO EXPLORE THE HARPOON TECHNIQUE..........WE HAVE ONLY HAD ABOUT 6 YEARS OF KILL SEASON DOWN HERE ...AND SOME OF THESE YEARS ONLY 3 DAYS OF KILL SEASON.......SO.....WE NEVER BOUGHT A POON! THE DOLLAR RULES

I HAVE ONLY HARPOONED TWO IN MY LIFE......AND I WOULD BET THAT NEW ENGLANDERS WOULD WINCE IF THEY SEEN IT.....

IN THE SOUTH.....WHEN THE FISH POPS UP.....WE POON IT......IN THE NORTH...YOU GUYS THROW THE POON. I HAVE HEARD A FULL TIME -WELL KNOWN GIANT KILLER FROM MONTAUK CLEARLY STATE THAT WHEN HE SEES COLOR...THE POON FLYS....HE RARES BACK AND LETS HER FLY......

NOW IF I HAD LET ONE FLY ON THE 75 INCH FISH BACK IN DEC.....WOULDN'T THAT BE A BIT PREMATURE ATTACK? I THINK SO.....

MOST CASES ....WHEN THE FISH HITS OUR DECK AFTER LIP GAFFING....WE PUT A HIGH-GPM SALTWATER WASHDOWN HOSE INTO THE MOUTH....JUST LIKE THE STANFORD UNIVERSITY TAG-A-GIANT CREWS DO....IF THEY CAN PERFORM OPEN GUT SURGERY THIS WAY AND THE TUNA STILL BREATHES ...THEN I FEEL I CAN 'SWIM " MY FISH ON THE DECK THIS WAY AS WELL...MAYBE NOT FOR 15 MINUTES ...BUT IT DOES WORK

NOTICE THE BLOOD FLOW WHEN THE BEAST CUTS HIS THROAT.......A GALLON COMES OUT INSTANTLY.......THE VIDEOS DON'T LIE

WE HAVE AVERAGED AROUND $14.85 FOR OUR SEVEN FISH THIS YEAR WITH THE HIGH BEING $17.80 I THINK...........

IF YOU WANT TO SWIM ONE IN NORTH CAROLINA WATERS....THIS MAY HAPPEN TO YOU AS SEEN IN THE VIDEO....I'M SURE MANY OF YOU HAVE SEEN THIS ONE BEFORE.....THE BFT ON THE END OF THIS ROD DIDN'T STAND A CHANCE....THE OPENING SCENE HAS A SMALLER BFT COMING TO GAFF...AND THEN BINGO.....OUT FROM THE DEEP COMES

CRANK IT UP! www.wahoonbox.com/videos/sharkattack.wmv
Well up here we usually know it is a keeper. I agree that sticking a short fish is bad and when they are close the lip gaff technique is a much better option. We have never considered the lip gaff they are just too big. To get them thru the door sometimes we need to use a poly ball to float there tail and a block and tackle to drag them in.
As far as buying a harpoon all you need to do is buy a 8 to 10 foot piece of ½” galvanized pipe and a 3/8” threaded rod coupling weld it to the pipe. And either buy or make your own shafts. Very cheap way to go. And it is very heavy and streamlined and will go down 15ft and stick with no problem if the need arises. As for sharks we have them also maybe not the numbers that you guys do but I have always thought the benefits outweigh the risks.
I think it is great you guys are getting paid well for your fish. The overall landings there are not what it is like up here when the bite is on. I have seen 30 ton days. When there is that many going to market at ounce anything that helps the quality means a better price for the boat! It seems when we start getting paid well the dam seiners will make a large set and ruin it for us!
As for bleeding we cut there throat hang them from the tailrope over the side and make a small cut back by the tail just into the blood line which serves as a vent all of the blood comes out of the meat that way even when the heart stops. Whatever works I am just passing on things I have learned over many years of commercial tuna fishing.
