    Clips for Planer

I have not been able to find in several searches what type of clip works best for the planer in a bridal system. Also, is there a specific length clip to clip on the planer to match the 31" bridal length. I think i've got the rest figured out.

    Thanks in advance

I use they same type FinRazr is showing, but you can get them in stainless at Lowes for about $4.00. Either bronze or stainless will work fine.

Another hint on making up the planer, if you have access to a sandblast cabinet, blast the entire planer assembly once its assembled, then spray paint it (I use flat black Rustoleum BBQ paint) and the paint will stay on for a long, long time.

i have been using the trigger snap clips - you can find them at boaters world or west marine, etc... They are a little easier for me to grab and open quickly - just a personal preference thing.

as for color - I found that heating the planer will allow you to paint it. We cleaned it, roughed a bit with sandpaper, then wiped with denatured alcohol. Then just made a hook with a clothes hanger and held the planer in front of a reddy heater. Once hot, we started spraying primer and then put back in front of heater - careful not to let scorch. Kept doing this with several coats of flat black. Paint has been on them for a year and still looks pretty good. All that being said, its still hard to beat the convenience of a large black sharpie!

    Clip to Clip length?

What's the answer to the question "...is there a specific length clip to clip on the planer to match the 31" bridal length?"

Also, there was a question recently asking if there is a different bridle length for different size planers. I don't recall seeing an answer, but if I missed it, please forgive and point me in the right direction.

31" no shorter than 29" on the bridle. This is measured from one edge of the mono where the aussie swivel tops out to the the other bridle loop where the aussie swivel tops out on it.

    This length will work fine for a #12, #16, #24 and a #32.

The length for clip to to clip will be determined by the loop of mono that you use to secure the clip to the planer. I like to use at least 300# mono. Just be sure that on the back of the planer you leave a little bit of play so the edge of the planer blade will not cut through the mono so quickly. It will look like one giant crimp without much mono between the crimps.I like to check this area after every trip to see if it needs to be re-done. Thinking of trying a slts thimble on the back loop to see if it lasts any longer.

Another idea that works when painting the planer. Wipe it down with vinegar to etch the metal and it will degrease. Then I apply several light mist coats of the Krylon black textured paint. Works great and lasts a good while.

I was told by another guy to try the heat thing and it worked pretty well. The only difference was I popped mine in the oven at the house and I had to deal with the Krylon smell for a few hours that night. Give it a try BOX, I just would not recommend trying to heat it in the microwave. But then again it might be fun to watch.
