CIRCLE HOOK IN TOURNEYS ///\\\
The rulings surfacing by NMFS concerning circle hook use and j-hook non use are bringing unfair advantage to the tournament arena. You know not much finesse is needed using a circle hook. You either do hook up or you don't. No If's and's or But's. Many here and across the tournament field see this as an unfair advantage to bling bling teams. Yes the once a year fishermen. Competitive teams fishing 250 or more days a year have now a handicap to contend with. I would like to hear your thoughts on this. What rulings would you like to see in place to lessen the handicap of the circle hook. Will you not play this game at all or will you demand a set of rules. For instance. The placement of the circle hook in the jaw of the fish. Or a cap on leader size. What new rules could tournaments come up with to keep this a fair event that many have contributed to over the years. Without your contributions, these events would not be here today. So lets hear what you want. These are your dollars on the line.

Do you think we will see 400 boats in the WMO this year?

The more rules the worse off it is for the field. Keep it simple. Either impose the circle hook rule in its entireity or reverse it completely. No exceptions. As far as circles bringing an unfair advantage I cannot agree. Think of it this way. How many times have you read that a weekender jumped one off. Once hooked on a circle then it usually sticks. If anything it may bring an advantage to catching all those fish that jumped off.
Also remeber that most of these weekender are familiar with circles from chunking up tuna the rest of the summer. 90% of those fish are caught on circles. I know it is night and day but those fisherman didn't use circles when they started unless they started within the last 8-10 years. Most adapted from j to circles. If the rule sticks I think you will not see a change in numbers of entries. You will see fisherman learning to adapt and catching more fish. In fact you may even see more dead fish on the dock because of the effectiveness of circle hooks once a fish is hooked. Now wouldn't that be ironic. |

DropBack I always wish to see more boats in the WMO. The more entries participating , the more the payout based on score. This is a double edge sword as Ark has noted. More bill fish will be targeted by more crews. The novice has a right as all do to participate and is encouraged by everyone. But this circle hook ruling takes the experience of catching a white away from the tournament field of long time participating players. This opens a door to new novice players and gives them a handicap, in my opinion. When you take the skills honed by Teams participating away, I again call this a handicap. The hook up with a j-hooks and lures presented by the skilled Teams are useless with this new ruling. Is baitmasters going to have a circle hook available with a monel leader already in a guac style for the new players.? 4 in pack ready to go? Yes I do see the skilled player being unfairly represented in the tournament arena. Yes, the long time players and committees know ways to even this handicap now in place. I will wait and see what comes of this. In the mean time, what would members here think in terms of tackle, line, placement of hook in jaw, size of hook or anything not mentioned here that could be discussed.

i think though it might bring some professional crews down overal the hardest part of the game in recent years is finding and rasing the fish, and on most days a good captain is gonna raise more fish, a good crew is gonna still get multiple hook ups when all the weekend warriors sprint to clear thier cockpit after they hook one white. Better crews are gonna catch more fish regaurdless. Anyone can give a half spool drop back and gut hook a fish and that one wont jump off either, i dont see the big difference.
