I think I'm going to be there mid April, anybody have any suggestions for fishing ??
Thats the info I'm looking for, what is going on there in April??
I am living in charleston at the moment. I spent last winter there as well. I don't know much about the fishing compared to the locals but i can give you some help here.
The inshore is really good year round. There are lots of reds and trout around most year round it seems like. The winter months the reds stack up on the flats and i believe start moving off around april to deeper water. Every time i fished for trout they have been brain dead and eat anything.
The offshore is good in the summer months i believe it starts to pick up around april. Compared to canyon fishing and fishing offshore in NC it doesnt seem to compare from what i have seen and heard. But i may be wrong it just seems to me if you have fished in the northeast or NC it offshore fishing in charleston may not do it for you. I could be wrong though.
I should be around in april and have done some fishin so i will have more info by then shoot me a pm i will help the best i can. In my opinion inshore fishing is worth giving a shot rather than offshore. If you have a boat though you could give offshore a shot get a few dolphin and wahoo and maybe a shot at some billfish.
Offshore in Charleston is just kicking off in April. Good catches of Blackfin (15 plus) and Wahoo are possible, if you can get to the fish (the wind always seems to blow in April and a 60mile run in 4-6 looks less than appealing). April used to be the start of Yellowfin season too, but it has been a few years since they were here in any numbers. It is possible to get a good mixed bag in April too, with Dolphin (to the south for the most part) and Billfish in the mix (we have caught Whites, Blues and Sails in April).
The summer bite here is really good, with a lot of nice size Dolphin and multiple shots at Billfish in May/June.
Blackfin, wahoo and the start of the Mahi should kick off around that time.![]()
Thanks for the info, it looks like I'll set up for redfish, and if the air/water temps/ wind speed make things happy, I'll try to get offshore. Lowcountry-- 60 miles for the offshore run is an hour closer than I have up here! We have to run 80 to 90 miles depending on which canyon we pick.![]()
Lee- Live bait ?? what do you use down there ? shrimp?? small blue claws? I'm fishing Jupiter, Florida the end of the month, Panama in February, and now you guys have me fixated on red fish (small ??) in April. What's wrong with me??![]()
