    Cayman wahoo report

    Hi guys

A short Cayman report for all you winter bound brothers up north:

Headed out to an area called 12 mile banks which is an underwater sea mount that rises up to with 100 ft of the surface from some seriously deep surrounding water. Choppy seas gave a bit of a rough ride out but as always it was beautiful being out there, with only one other boat for company. A few frigate birds were lazily circling high above and the sun was shining through high level clouds

We decided on trolling to start with to see if we could pick up an early season mahi or nice wahoo. Put out a mix spread of two wire lines attached to b/w ilanders and ballyhoo, two tuna feathers to pick up some small black fin for bait and a yo zuri bonito in yellow / green way way back.

Within 10mins of putting the lines out we had a big hit on the right wire line as wire was being pulled off the 9/0 senator at a great rate of knots. After a decent fight we got a very angry 35lb wahoo into the boat. Next was a hit on the bonito way back behind the boat, no more than 10 mins later. A second slightly larger wahoo at 37lbs was gaffed and pulled aboard. Then after a further 15 minutes we had another hit on the long bonito lure, this time a rather weenie 18lber came over the side into the boat with us.

We perhaps should have called it quits at this point but foolishly thought we'd try for some yellowfin on the chunk so we rustled up some small black fin and a couple of barra off the bank and set up a drift. 5 hours later we pulled the lines up for the last time and headed on back after 1 single hit! probably a wahoo as the line was cut extremely cleanly just above the hook.

All in all a great day out in the sun. Couple of things of interest, one being that it was the day before a major front came through and secondly that it was a green and yellow bonito that probed popular with the fish. We have a run of mahi from march to may so the wahoo may have just started feeding on the mahi and been attracted by the colour. A couple of pics below of the fish.

    12 mile

    Hey capt.

Always something happening out there, over the last few months the tuna chunking bite has been a serious hit and miss affair. Somedays out there reports come in of every boat getting a few 50-100lbers with fish jumping all around you, other days -nothing. doesn't even seem to be correlated to anything, tide / wind / moon / time etc?

Couple of nice blue marlin in the 150-200lb range have been taken in the last week and the mahi will start to show any day. Wahoo are still running very well at the moment with lots of good catches.

Its a great place but you gotta pick your day when you're in a 22 footer.

Caymen Al, thank you for taking the time to post up the report and the pictures, it gives all of us stuck in colder climates something to dream about at night. Thanks for sharing!
