The good ole "Bite Me" out of Wrightsville Beach has Cats in her. Maybe had to add a gallon of oil bewteen both engines bewteen oil changes. Never worried about those engines leaving to dock. Little smoke, but did not like being cold. I would crank them up today and head to the stream and not think twice about...
Had 3 sets of them over the last 10 years. 3116's, 3126's, and currently the C12's. As with any mechanical device things break, all were taken care of through a good warranty program and good service from both Ransome Engine and South Jersey Service. Very satisfied with the performance of all 3 boats.
Over the last couple of years Cat has had their share of bumps in the road. I believe it is because they do outscource alot of the external components, and as a result may have slipped a little bit in overall quality.
Cat remains high on my list to power my next boat[ if there ever is one in this economy],but I would do some serious research into my other choices before committing.

I've got a pair of 3126s - They've generally been pretty good. I did blow a turbo last year, and have had to replace the water pump a few times, but overall not bad.
They did smoke and it took a long time to figure out how to improve them - Cleaned turbos and aftercoolers, reset the injectors even though they aren't due for service, and started using special oil - looks like it might be licked now. Service has generally been good, but occasionally a little slow to get to the bottom of things...
for two years and was intimate with my engine room's 3126 CATS. i tried to like them, although they were a little unpredictable and not consistently reliable. so that = mediocre on the engines.
i absolutely hated the CAT service. the manager of the service Co. (no names mentioned but they know who they are in NE) was the most royal of arseholers. i have it on good evidence that he will send the service people to the owner that SPIFFS him in Cashola Payola the most. WTF is that? does his employer know that? does CAT know that? they condone it!
and, even when they did show up they SUCKED!!!! bad attitudes and little knowledge about specifics or even my engines history other than how to sell their services and maximize the bills.
and that brings me to my opinions about the company generally. i need do no more than see the experience that SFC member STORM and others have had with CAT involving the 3196 and C-12 engines, where CAT has a class action certified against them now in federal court in Michigan. search the threads here and you will find all you want on them.
they are gonna take a $1 Billion hit and they desreve it, because they lied, cheated and did everything they could to sway the court on how they had no liability EVEN though they knew, as it later came out to the Judge in that case, that the subcontractor of their Intercooler told them in writing DO NOT USE THIS INTERCOOLER IT IS NOT GOING TO WORK FOR THIS ENGINE. instead CAT put families lives at risk for their own profit. i hate them for that and will never spend another dime on their product.
my real experience = my conclusions. STORM, SUSHI HUNTER, others, anything to add? the prosecution rests.

I was at the Miami Boat Show today and had a chance to speak with the Cat guys about the ACERT technology. It is not a commonrail fuel delivery design, it's a mish mash of upgrades to the standard model. The techs said they still burn exactly the same as their standard counterparts but deliver more HP. The technology was designed for the trucking industry at a cost of around $3 billion. It's nice to test new technology in engines on guys who use them every day to make the world go round. This ***usually*** translates to a lower failure rate on the marine side. Cool guys and a wealth of info from them to help me better understand that technology. Also talked to the MTU guys about their new series 2000 engine and the complex turbo system. Cool stuff!
had to rebuild a 3412 825hp last fall engine only had 720 hrs on it . the oil sample we take before each change had metal in it . all the bearings were replaced on the crank . when they put her back together the oil pressure relief valve was stuck somehow and she blew the filters off twice , oil everywhere . fixed now with no problems last sample had ne metal in it . all in all good motors will still stick with cats because of the parts and service availability .
