the only Cat experience I had was the 3208 we had in our 32' Coast Guard Patrol Boat and they were great

we had one 3208 blow-up in the stations other 32' HPB (not my boat ) and I think that was an oil pressure/feed problem... wasn't Cat's fault, I seem to remember it was that boat's engineer fugged up

now I believe some of the newer Ford F650's and F750's have Cat Diesel power and I've not heard of ANY problems wth them either

3126s in the Scalawag no problems with them or the service guys at Albin in OC. Access on the 305 Albie is an issue, same with any 30 ft express boat though.

Enjoyed with pleasure reading someone else's problems with newer CAT engines. The last good one they built was the 3208NA - pre-turbo bs. All the turbo was crank out more hp and destroy the engine off long before it was deemed so.

My best friend had a commercial boat with a single 3516, that cranked out 1600hp with 750rpm continuous. He used to see the smaller boats getting their first turboed engines and year later replacing them.

The physics are quite simple - Same block, same pistons, add a turbo and double the horsepower = Higher RPM, More friction, more heat, shorter life

Well they must be doing OK here in NC. I have spent the past year and half as the PM for the ongoing renovation and new upfit for the CAT corporate office in Cary, NC. Always easy to work and very organized.

The CATs in the Hatt

The 3208 at lower HP ratings is a good engine and will last thousands of hours as long as you take care of them. The downside is that they are big and heavy for the power that they make. One other thing; Caterpillar has figured out how to turn cast iron into gold by painting it yellow. Buying parts is usually a painful exercise.

They aren't particularly better or worse than the other major manufacturers. These came with the boat, I'm going to keep them.
