You'll catch bigger fish by trolling round the weeds. Marlin under there too. Not just mahi mahi.

On those hot dog days of summer the fish might be deep. Verticle a diamond jig down to the thermocline. Crank it in as fast as possible the first time and watch what chases it up. Sometimes ono will bite it off on the drop. Ahi allso like to bite on the drop so yoyo is a good trick.

Somtimes the mahi will chase but not bite. Then they just hang out 30/40 deep. This is when I like to send um a livie clipped behind the dorsal.

    Thanks Weekender.

Your exactly right Ahi Slayer. You'll catch the majority of your larger fish while trolling. However, seeing schools of gaffers around a tree isn't uncommon at all off of Carolina. Big schools. There isn't anything out there that says you have to troll by them at full speed to catch them. I would however make a pass or two with my spread before I cranked everything up. For the very same marlin you spoke of. Or wahoo or... For the most part they're the same creature. I say for the most part because I have seen a few, 2 to be exact, GIANT dolphins that wouldn't hit anything in the boat. Only thing they would do was race up to a hooked bailer of about 4-5 pounds and swallow him up to his head. Kill him. Then spit him out and go on to another one. 10ft off the stern!!! Exciting but frustrating. Both woudl've gone 60+. When the class of fish we're talking about is around it's best to have at least a dozen small, I mean teeny ballyhoos rigged on short, like 1-2ft at the most leaders ready as pitch baits. Small whole squids work like a charm too. With these it's no different than bailing the smaller size fish except they put on an even better show...and you need a gaff. Awesome stuff!
I'm not discounting throwing lures and spoons and all that stuff at them. Not at all. It's a different kind of experience. It's really what ever floats your boat. No rights or wrong. As long as your having fun that is! This is one way that I know for a fact you can crush them every time with.

ABOUT 90% OF THE TIME WE FIND MAHI MORE THAN ANY OTHER SPECIES AROUND FLOATING WEEDS AND DEBREE OFF S FLA.

I ALWAYS MAKE A COUPLE OF TROLLING PASSES AROUND DEBREE. ALSO, I LOOK AROUND THE DEBREE FOR BLUE BACKS ON THEM MAHI. SOMETIMES THEY DON'T LIKE TO COME OUT FROM UNDER THE SHADE. WHEN THAT IS THE CASE, I LIKE TO THROW OUT A HAND FULL OF MAHOOAS (GLASS MINNOWS) OR CHUNKS OF CUT BAIT. THAT ALWAYS GETS THEM OUT OF THE SHADE AND CLOSE TO THE BOAT. IF THERE ARE LOTS OF PEANUTS AROUND, I LIKE TO SEND A LARGE LIVE BAIT DOWN DEEP. SOMETIMES THOSE BIG BULLS & COWS LIKE TO HANG DEEP AND OUT OF ONES SITE.

IF THEM MAHI AREN'T AROUND, I LIKE TO CATCH A COUPLE OF THEM LAZY TRIPLE TAILS....THEY ARE SOME GOOD EATING
