we do many trips and transport fuel with us almost 50% of the time when we go out to the canyons, But we are transporting diesel not gas on my boat i have brought 55 gallon drums with us as soon as we get to the fishing grounds pump the fuel then we put the drum in the marlin tower out of the way. On my buddy's boat he has a 75 gallon fuel bladder which works very well and has an electronic pump which saves allot of time and the bladder is rolled up and out of the way. We only do this if we are running in a tourney or going way off the edge or 100+ miles off shore. Any thing less than 100miles out we do not need to bring extra fuel along.
Buying a bigger boat is not realestic solution, have any or you been to the gas pumps lately??????
When out 45 miles yesterday for some Groupers ( did not find them ) - plugged in some #'s for The Nipple & found out it was 19 miles further out. Started trolling that way, but all the radio reports said it was very slow, decide to head south for Groupers & only found Pinky's while eating a Wahoo sandwich.
Slowed down my speed to about 4500 RPM's ( out & back ) - high speed trolled to the second spot ( pulling 2 Cedar Plugs @ 10 knots ) - kept both engines on the entire time - when a total of 120 miles - from dock to dock & still have about half full fuel tanks ( will know the total gas usage after refilling today ).
So with the right weather forecast, a crew of 3 or 4, it's doable without carrying extra fuel. Will try a trip or two with the added security of carrying extra 20 gallons of fuel, just to make sure.........ICM
UPDATE-------- 60 gals. of gas @ 120 miles means I'm burning 2 gals. a mile, leaving 20 gals. as reserve ( Cat holds 80 gals.)
Add 20 extra gals. - brings the total gas to 100 gals.
Keeping a reserve of 20 gals.- If I use 80x2=160 formula.....
That would give me a range of 160 miles to get out to The Nipple, slow troll for an hour on a single engine - then slow troll on the other engine for an hour. Get on the spot, drift & jig, make it back loaded with Tuna, Wahoos & Mahi.........
That's current thinking.........
Or maybe I should wait for WAHOONBOX'S next Tuna Trip offer & bring a positive attitude, lunch for the crew & ice for the catch.......ICM
Found this Super Siphon & purchased 2 today.....

Pick your days. In our grady with twin 225s we average around 100 gal. If its rough 120 gal. if its flat 100gal and one day somehow we made it back and only burned 90 gal at 45mph all the way home. That is trolling with both engines on I seem to get more bites that way I guess its the hum the motors make when their INSYNC.![]()
