Jermey, now you see why I don't post very often anymore. You can't win for trying to share a little professional insight.
    Thanks for the reply.

--- an old timer told me back in the day----\ I think some of this recolection "back in the day" may be refering to the 1960's era.
Carrying a single block of ice aboard is certainly before my era. As far as tuna's being targeted and caught in the late '70's/early '80's, I remember seeing mono leaders used for the first time in Hatteras about 1979 or 1980 while still in college. I remember this as the "new discovery" to catch more tuners and thought it was a little silly at the time to worry about a leader being less visable.
As far as Charter boats throwing back Yellowfins "back in the day", I honestly believe this is folk lore. About the only fish a Hatterasman would not eat (at least since the '70's) back then was a False Albacore or big Amberjack. The "Old" Channel Bass Resturant would feature "tuna Steaks" that the Harrison boys brought in. The first time I ever even heard of eating a tuna steak was in Hatteras.
Things may have been much different in the 1960's--- I don't know.

As far as when the Bluefin started showing up in any numbers--- as I recall, it was about '91 or '92. The heyday of winter Hatteras Bluefin fishing was '93 through '95-- before they changed their major wintering grounds to south of Cape Lookout.

I used to work there during the summers.. shame that place closed. The Harrisons are great people.
