    Cape Lookout weekend Report

Saturday I had only one thing in mind and it was SPADEFISH !!!
Picked up 3 buckets of jellyfish at the cape and headed to Atlas to try out my 10 lbs test fluoro and baby hooks....

Anchored up and started chumming this strange food for a fish... The spades showed up as did a dive boat which and the kids were already playing with some other fish. What also showed up was a Dive boat. Within minutes we had bubbles from a dozen divers under the boat and there went my spade trial!!!!
The kids wanted to send jigs down to see how divers compare to AJ's but instead we pulled up the anchor and took off. Never would I allow my divers to go under a fishing boat had I been the Capt. of that boat................

Anyway we headed further out and abandoned the idea of Spades!
"Pelagic Magic" pulled up this red on the first drop and we thought it would be all business.... He even said I wish Bicoto was around!

But we were covered by AJ's and almaco's plus sandtigers that started cleaning up every decent bait that went down!

We put out small hooks and loaded some nice Beeliners. Marc was the first one to start the dance releasing also lots of small american reds that should be ripe next year!

Patrick who was back from Wisconsin where he discovered walleye and fresh water baracuda fishing abandoned the idea of a grouper and went for the color red!

Gilles & Lucke got to get there share of work on some AJ's and I never got to touch a SPADEFISH! My day will come...

Sunday was family time and in the evening Jacky took us out to meet his favorite pets with lots of action in between Harkers Island and Beaufort...
He has had lots of free time to figure out this fish and it is just so relaxing fishing for these babies dreaming already about redhead season!

Another fine day. Sorry on the divers. They just don't seem to care who is already there.

I love that color red! ARS and jumbo beeliners will make a fisherman happy any day.
Beautiful report and pictures as always from the Merry Marlin crew. I wish I had been with you guys to catch those pretty red fish. Soon, I hope.

Had the same thing happen to me on a far away wreck last Friday. A pink sport boat, approached from the north and proceeded to drop their hook 50 feet from me on the wreck and unload an army of divers with spear guns. I don't get it. He asked me if I was bottomfishing. I replied I was trying to. He said "don't worry we won't stay long". Of course I picked up and left disappointed. I had been looking forward to trying that wreck for weeks now. Oh well.

    Rock on Merry Marlin crew!

what's the law on dive boats? Aren't we suppose to give them a certain buffer if they are anchored? Are they suppose to give us any leeway?

We are definitely supposed to give them room, but I do not know if they have to. Guessing from the way they have just run up to me and dropped on several occasions, I would guess they do not?
    Bottom dweller would know.

Offshore to inshore the MM crew shows no mercy on the critters. Great stuff once again. Sorry to hear about the dive boat ruining your chances. The spades will pay eventually. We have had a run in or two with dive boats also. Some captains need to show a little more concern for their divers. There is a dive boat in our area that is known for anchoring right on top of hook and line fisherman and sending divers down. Very dangerous!
